Parasitic manipulation: a social context.

چکیده
Thomas et al. (2005) conclude their interesting review of parasitic manipulation in an optimistic tone and state that “the study of manipulation is far from being weak”. This serves as a timely antidote to Poulin’s sobering message of a Kuhnian type weakening paradigm (Poulin, 2000). This is not to say that the authors find fault with Poulin’s analyses, but rather they find reasons for optimism through their emphasis on multiple approaches, such as detailing proximate mechanisms of control (e.g. proteomics), insights through comparisons with broader behavioural ecol r p l a P i t h t o o h s t et al., 2003). However, some hosts groups, which may have potential benefits, have been underexploited. With this in mind I would like to draw the reader’s attention to the potential of social insects (wasps, bees, ants and termites) as model systems in which to study parasitic manipulation of host behaviour. The social insects can be seen as victims of their own success! Insect societies have long fascinated man as evidenced by their mention in the Bible “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise” (Proverbs 6:6). E.O. Wilson called them “among the

A Critical Functional Approach to Educational Discourses of Students and Professors over the Internet Context
This paper investigated the ways Iranian B.A and M.A students of English language and their professors represent themselves linguistically in their e-mails in general, and the ways they construct and negotiate power with regard to social and cultural norms in particular. It examined 84 e-mail messages students and professors exchanged in 2012-2013 academic year through Halliday`s Systemic Funct...
متن کاملParasites: evolution's neurobiologists.
For millions of years, parasites have altered the behaviour of their hosts. Parasites can affect host behaviour by: (1) interfering with the host's normal immune-neural communication, (2) secreting substances that directly alter neuronal activity via non-genomic mechanisms and (3) inducing genomic- and/or proteomic-based changes in the brain of the host. Changes in host behaviour are often rest...

This study compared the effects of teacher-provided direct and indirect written corrective feedback and manipulation of resource-directing dimensions of task cognitive complexity along +/- Here and Now condition on the grammatical accuracy of Iranian intermediate EFL learners’ narrative writing tasks. There were 45 participants in the study who were randomly assigned to three experimental group...
متن کاملA contextual reading of conditional commitments
This paper puts forward a view on conditional commitments as causal rules, using action language K as the specification framework. The proposal builds upon an operational notion of social context, in such a way that conditional commitments are represented as rules in context. This approach enables the manipulation of conditional commitments in terms of the manipulation of the social interaction...
متن کاملParasites and supernormal manipulation.
Social parasites may exploit their hosts by mimicking other organisms that the hosts normally benefit from investing in or responding to in some other way. Some parasites exaggerate key characters of the organisms they mimic, possibly in order to increase the response from the hosts. The huge gape and extreme begging intensity of the parasitic common cuckoo chick (Cuculus canorus) may be an exa...
