Effects of gizzard shad on benthic communities in reservoirs

چکیده
Effects of gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum on benthic communities in a large southern reservoir (Lake Texoma, U.S.A.) were examined during two field enclosure and exclosure experiments in which enclosures were stocked at high and low densities in 1998 and 1999, respectively. In both years, chironomid abundance significantly increased in treatments that excluded large fishes from foraging on sediments. Mean abundance of chironomids and ostracods were significantly higher (P< 0 05) in exclosures than enclosures stocked with gizzard shad at 1140–1210 kg ha . In 1999, benthic invertebrate abundances did not differ (P> 0 08) between exclosure and enclosures stocked at 175–213kgha . Per cent organic matter, algal abundance and abundance of other macroinvertebrates in sediments did not differ significantly among treatments in either year. Although chironomid abundance was reduced in gizzard shad enclosures in 1998, food habits from this and other studies showed that adult gizzard shad in Lake Texoma only consumed detritus and algae. It is likely that high sedimentation rates in Lake Texoma limit the ability of gizzard shad to regulate algae and detritus in benthic sediments. Thus, it is concluded that disturbance of benthic sediments by gizzard shad caused the observed reduction in chironomid abundance, rather than through consumption or competition for resources. # 2003 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles

Direct and Indirect Effects of Gizzard Shad on Bluegill Growth and Population Size Structure
—Competition with gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum has been shown to influence survival of larval bluegills Lepomis macrochirus as well as growth and size structure of largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides, which prey on these planktivorous species. However, little is known about how the presence of gizzard shad influences bluegills beyond the larval stage. We examined bluegill–gizzard shad int...
متن کاملFood Consumption by Larval Gizzard Shad: Zooplankton Effects and Implications for Reservoir Communities
—Because peak abundance of larval gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum occurs simultaneously with the midsummer decline of macrozooplankton in Ohio reservoirs, we hypothesized that zooplanktivory by larval gizzard shad caused this decline. To test this hypothesis, we compared larval food consumption with zooplankton productivity in two reservoirs. Larval gizzard shad began to influence zooplankton ...
متن کاملBiomass-Dependent Diet Shifts in Omnivorous Gizzard Shad: Implications for Growth, Food Web, and Ecosystem Effects
—We examined diet patterns of omnivorous gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum in Acton Lake, Ohio, during 1994–1997 using a multiple stable isotope analysis to quantify the role of this species in the system. On most dates, zooplankton were relatively depleted in d13C (about 230‰ to 225.5‰) compared with sediments (225‰), permitting construction of a mixing model to determine the proportion of C de...
متن کاملNitrogen and phosphorus excretion by detritivorous gizzard shad in a reservoir ecosystem
The detritivorous fish, gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), provides nutrients to phytoplankton in reservoirs by ingesting organic detritus associated with sediments and excreting substantial quantities of nutrients such as N and P in soluble forms that are highly available to phytoplankton, We estimated nutrient excretion by gizzard shad in a eutrophic reservoir (Acton Lake, Ohio) during April...
متن کاملEffects of agricultural subsidies of nutrients and detritus on fish and plankton of shallow-reservoir ecosystems.
Agricultural activities increase exports of nutrients and sediments to lakes, with multiple potential impacts on recipient ecosystems. Nutrient inputs enhance phytoplankton and upper trophic levels, and sediment inputs can shade phytoplankton, interfere with feeding of consumers, and degrade benthic habitats. Allochthonous sediments are also a potential food source for detritivores, as is sedim...
