Association of Salivary & Plasma Glucose Level with Oral Health Status among Type 2 Diabetics in India - A Comparative Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background and Objectives: Diabetes is fast gaining the status of a potential epidemic in India with more than 62 million diabetic individuals currently diagnosed with the condition. Biochemical analysis of saliva would be of great biomedical importance, since saliva is very easy to collect offering a cost-effective approach for screening of large populations, and could represent an alternative for the patient whose blood is difficult to obtain when compliance is a problem. The objective of the study was to correlate blood glucose level and salivary glucose level with oral health status among type 2 diabetic and non-diabetics. Methodology: Cross sectional study was conducted among 130 diabetic patients and 130 non-diabetic individuals attending premier medical institutions in Bhopal. 2ml of peripheral blood was collected for the estimation of random non fasting plasma glucose levels. Unstimulated saliva was collected for the estimation of salivary glucose. Results: Salivary glucose levels were significantly higher in patients with diabetes than controls. There was a significant positive correlation between salivary and plasma glucose levels in patients with diabetes suggesting that salivary glucose levels can be used as a monitoring tool for predicting glycemic control in diabetic patients. Conclusion: Salivary glucose levels can be used as a noninvasive, painless technique for the measurement of diabetic status of a patient in a dental set up. *Corresponding author: Ashish Dwivedi, Department of Public Health Dentistry, People’s College of Dental Sciences, Peoples University, Bhopal, India, Tel: 91-8871134616; E-mail: [email protected]

The detection of salivary glucose, caries and periodontal status in diabetes mellitus patients
OBJECTIVE: Oral manifestations in diabetic patients can have different causes. Possibly, one of these causes is salivary glucose. The aim of this study was to evaluate salivary glucose concentrations in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) and their association with oral and dental manifestations and compare them with normal adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this analytical study, 128 p...
متن کاملCorrelation of Oral Health Status and Salivary Antioxidant Capacity in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Objective: Dental caries is considered as one of the major complication of diabetes mellitus. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) demonstrate evidence of oxidant–antioxidant imbalances in their biological fluids such as saliva. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of oral health status and salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in T2DM. Materials and Methods...
متن کاملEstimation of salivary glucose, salivary amylase, salivary total protein and salivary flow rate in diabetics in India.
Diabetes is known to influence salivary composition and function, eventually affecting the oral cavity. We thus evaluated saliva samples for levels of glucose, amylase and total protein, and assessed salivary flow rate in diabetics and healthy non-diabetics. We also analyzed these parameters with regard to duration and type of diabetes mellitus and gender, and aimed to assess the interrelations...
متن کاملEvaluation of salivary glucose levels among children with early childhood caries compared to children with healthy teeth
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The present study was carried out with the aim to evaluate the salivary glucose levels among children with early childhood caries (ECC) compared to a group of healthy children without any caries and help control ECC.METHODS: 55 children with an age range of 5-6 years were selected from some kindergartens. Then the subjects were divided into two groups of with ECC & without E...
متن کاملGlucose Level Estimation in Diabetes Mellitus By Saliva: A Bloodless Revolution.
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a massive, growing, silent epidemic that has the potential to cripple health services in all parts of the world. Currently, a diagnosis of diabetes is achieved by evaluating plasma glucose levels. Saliva offers some distinctive advantages. Whole saliva can be collected non-invasively and by individuals with limited training. The present study was aimed to estimat...
