چکیده

Atmospheric modeling systems require economical methods to solve the non-hydrostatic Euler equations. Two major differences between hydrostatic models and a full non-hydrostatic description lies in the vertical velocity tendency and numerical stiffness associated with sound waves. In this work we introduce a new arbitrary-order vertical discretization entitled the staggered nodal finiteelement method (SNFEM). Our method uses a generalized discrete derivative that consistently combines the discontinuous Galerkin and spectral element methods on a staggered grid. Our combined method leverages the accurate wave propagation and conservation properties of spectral elements with staggered methods that eliminate stationary (21x) modes. Furthermore, high-order accuracy also eliminates the need for a reference state to maintain hydrostatic balance. In this work we demonstrate the use of high vertical order as a means of improving simulation quality at relatively coarse resolution. We choose a test case suite that spans the range of atmospheric flows from predominantly hydrostatic to nonlinear in the large-eddy regime. Our results show that there is a distinct benefit in using the high-order vertical coordinate at low resolutions with the same robust properties as the low-order alternative.

Exploring the Effects of a High-order Vertical Coordinate in a Non-hydrostatic Global Model

As atmospheric models are pushed towards non-hydrostatic resolutions, there is a growing need for new numerical discretizations that are accurate, robust and effective at these scales. In this paper we describe a new arbitrary-order staggered nodal finite-element method (SNFEM) vertical discretization motivated by flux reconstruction methods. The SNFEM formulation generalizes traditional second...

Verification of a non-hydrostatic dynamical core

The non-hydrostatic (NH) compressible Euler equations of dry atmosphere are solved in a simplified two dimensional (2-D) slice framework employing a spectral element method (SEM) for the horizontal discretization and a finite difference method (FDM) for the vertical discretization. The SEM uses high-order nodal basis functions asso-5 ciated with Lagrange polynomials based on Gauss–Lobatto–Legen...

Verification of a non-hydrostatic dynamical core using the horizontal spectral element method and vertical finite difference method: 2-D aspects

The non-hydrostatic (NH) compressible Euler equations for dry atmosphere were solved in a simplified two-dimensional (2-D) slice framework employing a spectral element method (SEM) for the horizontal discretization and a finite difference method (FDM) for the vertical discretization. By using horizontal SEM, which decomposes the physical domain into smaller pieces with a small communication ste...

The central-upwind finite-volume method for atmospheric numerical modeling

A semi-discretized central-upwind finite-volume (CFV) scheme has been developed for atmospheric modeling applications. The non-oscillatory property of the scheme is achieved by employing high-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) reconstruction method, and time integration relies on explicit Runge-Kutta method. The WENO reconstruction is fifth-order accurate and implemented in a dim...
