چکیده

Water-mist fire suppression systems offer a number of potential advantages over conventional sprinkler systems. A water-mist system uses very fine droplets of around 50μm diameter, which results in entirely different behaviour. In particular the water-mist remains suspended in air for long periods, and is influenced by the airflows caused by the fire and the general ventilation regime. In order to better understand the processes involved, a numerical model has been developed that models the effect of a water-mist fire suppression system on a typical tunnel fire scenario. A commercial available CFD package (fluent) is used. In this model, the water-mist is represented by a discrete phase model and the fire is modelled with a non-premixed combustion model. For simplicity a propane fire was used. Initial results show behaviour consistent with real fires and experiments. However limitations of the combustion model have been identified, which limit its suitability for this scenario.

Probabilistic simulation of cable performance and water based protection in cable tunnel fires

Nuclear power plants contain a significant amount of fire load in form of electrical cables. The performance of the cables is interesting both from the fire development and system failure viewpoints. In this work, cable tunnel fires are studied using numerical simulations, focusing on the fire spreading along power cables and the efficiency of the water suppression in preventing the cable failu...

A Methodology for Life Safety Assessment in Road Tunnel Fires

This paper presents a methodology for evaluating life safety risks in road tunnel fires. The methodology considers three realistic fire scenarios, smoke spread, occupant evacuation, and reliability of fire suppression systems. The three fire scenarios represent three variations of fire growth rates. The road tunnel in this study is assumed to have two traffic tubes, a longitudinal ventilation s...

Numerical simulation of water entry of tunnel cross section with different deadrise angles and tunnel radiuses

This study deals with the numerical modeling of symmetrical water entry of tunneled sections. In this study, firstly, the water entry problem of a wedge section without tunnel in four different deadrise angles was numerically modeled. The obtained results related to the pressure distribution on these sections and the maximum pressure have been compared with the experiment results. In the next s...

Ventilation and Suppression Systems in Road Tunnels: Some Issues regarding Their Appropriate Use in a Fire Emergency

Two important tunnel safety technologies are addressed. The majority of long road tunnels have ventilation systems. In the event of a fire in a tunnel, such systems will influence fire development in a number of different ways. Recent research and observations on these influences are presented. The effects discussed are critical ventilation velocity for smoke control and the influence of ventil...
