Severe atherosclerotic changes, including aortic occlusion, associated with hyperhomocysteinaemia and antiphospholipid antibodies.

چکیده
Three patients are described with severe systemic atherosclerosis, including aortic occlusion, in the presence of a spectrum of risk factors, including hypercholesterolaemia, hypertension, a positive family history of cardiovascular problems, and hyperhomocysteinaemia. In all three patients high levels of anticardiolipin antibodies were found. The possible pathogenic role of antiphospholipid antibodies in atherosclerosis in the context of hyperhomocysteinaemia in these patients is discussed.

Thromb Haemost 2006; 95: 900–1 Hyperhomocysteinaemia is a risk factor for thrombosis and recurrent pregnancy loss (1–2). Similar mechanisms appear to mediate thrombosis and pregnancy loss associated with hyperhomocysteinaemia and with antiphospholipid antibodies (3). We report the case of a female patient with an unusual association of hyperhomocysteinemia, normocalcemic hyperparathyroidism, gr...
متن کاملRole of Transthoracic Echocardiography in the Evaluation of Patients with Retinal Vein Occlusion
Introduction: Retinal vein occlusion is a common vascular disorder disrupting vision. Two basic types of RVO are branch retinal vein occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Retinal vein occlusion is a multifactor process including systemic illness and local retinal factors.RVO may be associated with atherosclerotic risk factors. We analyzed the role of 2 dimensional transthor...

متن کاملComparison of Serum Level of Antiphospholipid Antibodies and Homocysteine in Patients with Pemphigus Vulgaris and Healthy Subjects: A Case-Control Study
Introduction: Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune blistering disease of the skin and mucous membrane. Antiphospholipid antibodies are a group of autoantibodies found in patients with autoimmune diseases. Due to the risk for thrombotic events in autoimmune diseases, we decided to evaluate the correlation between pemphigus vulgaris and predictive elements of atherothrombosis including antiphospho...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, multisystem, autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the human body including the eyes. Common blinding ocular manifestations include central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), severe vaso-occlusive retinopathy, and optic nerve involvement. Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) in lupus is usually associated ...
