Axioms for Centrality

چکیده
Given a social network, which of its nodes are more central? This question has been asked many times in sociology, psychology and computer science, and a whole plethora of centrality measures (a.k.a. centrality indices, or rankings) were proposed to account for the importance of the nodes of a network. In this paper, we try to provide a mathematically sound survey of the most important classic centrality measures known from the literature and propose an axiomatic approach to establish whether they are actually doing what they have been designed for. Our axioms suggest some simple, basic properties that a centrality measure should exhibit. Surprisingly, only a new simple measure based on distances, harmonic centrality, turns out to satisfy all axioms; essentially, harmonic centrality is a correction to Bavelas’s classic closeness centrality [5] designed to take unreachable nodes into account in a natural way. As a sanity check, we examine in turn each measure under the lens of information retrieval, leveraging state-of-the-art knowledge in the discipline to measure the effectiveness of the various indices in locating web pages that are relevant to a query. While there are some examples of such comparisons in the literature, here for the first time we also take into consideration centrality measures based on distances, such as closeness, in an information-retrieval setting. The results closely match the data we gathered using our axiomatic approach. Our results suggest that centrality measures based on distances, which in the last years have been neglected in information retrieval in favor of spectral centrality measures, do provide highquality signals; moreover, harmonic centrality pops up as an excellent general-purpose centrality index for arbitrary directed graphs.

Random-Walk Closeness Centrality Satisfies Boldi-Vigna Axioms
Recently Boldi and Vigna proposed axioms that would characterize good notions of centrality. We study a random-walk version of closeness centrality and prove that is satisfies Boldi-Vigna axioms for non-directed graphs.
متن کاملAttachment Centrality for Weighted Graphs
Measuring how central nodes are in terms of connecting a network has recently received increasing attention in the literature. While a few dedicated centrality measures have been proposed, Skibski et al. [2016] showed that the Attachment Centrality is the only one that satisfies certain natural axioms desirable for connectivity. Unfortunately, the Attachment Centrality is defined only for unwei...
متن کاملA Generic Axiomatic Characterization of Centrality Measures in Social Network
Centrality is an important notion in complex networks; it could be used to characterize how influential a node or an edge is in the network. It plays an important role in several other network analysis tools including community detection. Even though there are a small number of axiomatic frameworks associated with this notion, the existing formalizations are not generic in nature. In this paper...
متن کاملAxioms for Recursion in Call-by-Value
We propose an axiomatization of fixpoint operators in typed call-by-value programming languages, and give its justifications in two ways. First, it is shown to be sound and complete for the notion of uniform T -fixpoint operators of Simpson and Plotkin. Second, the axioms precisely account for Filinski’s fixpoint operator derived from an iterator (infinite loop constructor) in the presence of f...
متن کاملAn Axiomatic and an Average-Case Analysis of Algorithms and Heuristics for Metric Properties of Graphs
In recent years, researchers proposed several algorithms that compute metric quantities of real-world complex networks, and that are very efficient in practice, although there is no worstcase guarantee. In this work, we propose an axiomatic framework to analyze the performances of these algorithms, by proving that they are efficient on the class of graphs satisfying certain axioms. Furthermore,...
