A hierarchical search for gravitational waves from supermassive black hole binary mergers

چکیده
We present a method to search for gravitational waves from coalescing supermassive binary black holes in LISA data. The search utilizes the F-statistic to maximize over, and determine the values of, the extrinsic parameters of the binary system. The intrinsic parameters are searched over hierarchically using stochastically generated multi-dimensional template banks to recover the masses and sky locations of the binary. We present the results of this method applied to the mock LISA data Challenge 1B data set.

Gravitational Waves from Supermassive Black Hole Coalescence in a Hierarchical Galaxy Formation Model
We investigate the expected gravitational wave emission from coalescing supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries resulting from mergers of their host galaxies. When galaxies merge, the SMBHs in the host galaxies sink to the center of the new merged galaxy and form a binary system. We employ a semi-analytic model of galaxy and quasar formation based on the hierarchical clustering scenario to esti...
متن کاملConsequences of Gravitational Radiation Recoil
Coalescing binary black holes experience an impulsive kick from anisotropic emission of gravitational waves. Recoil velocities are sufficient to eject most coalescing black holes from dwarf galaxies and globular clusters, which may explain the apparent absence of massive black holes in these systems. Ejection from giant elliptical galaxies would be rare, but coalescing black holes are displaced...
متن کاملAccretion during the merger of supermassive black holes
We study the evolution of disk accretion during the merger of supermassive black hole binaries in galactic nuclei. In hierarchical galaxy formation models, the most common binaries are likely to arise from minor galactic mergers, and have unequal mass black holes. Once such a binary becomes embedded in an accretion disk at a separation a ∼ 0.1 pc, the merger proceeds in two distinct phases. Dur...
متن کاملSupermassive black hole mergers and cosmological structure formation
Massive black holes (MBHs), with masses in the range 103−108 M⊙, which merge with a companion black hole of similar mass are expected to be the most powerful source of gravitational radiation in the frequency range probed by LISA. MBH binaries can be detected by LISA up to z ≃ 5−15. Gravitational waves from MBH mergers can serve as a powerful tool to study the early evolution of the MBH populat...
متن کاملThe Kozai Mechanism and the Evolution of Binary Supermassive Black Holes
We consider the dynamical evolution of bound, hierarchical triples of supermassive black holes that might be formed in the nuclei of galaxies undergoing sequential mergers. The tidal force of the outer black hole on the inner binary produces eccentricity oscillations through the Kozai mechanism, and this can substantially reduce the gravitational wave merger time of the inner binary. We numeric...
