Feeding Protected Sodium Bicarbonate Attenuates Hindgut Acidosis in Horses Fed a High-Grain Ration
نویسنده
چکیده
Hindgut acidosis (HGA) is a common problem in horses consuming either large quantities of grain or fructan-rich forages. Horses suffering from HGA may develop anorexia, colic, or laminitis or display stereotypical behaviors such as wood chewing and stall weaving. Feeding a protected sodium bicarbonate (PSB) is a safe and effective method of attenuating HGA without producing a metabolic alkalosis. Controlling Acidosis in the Equine Hindgut
When cereal grain is fed to horses there is a risk of laminitis and it is also common to fmd behavioural changes characterised by chewing wood, eating bedding and grasping (wind sucking). This paper discusses the link between acidity in the gut, as a result of grain feeding, and the risk of laminitis and adverse behaviour. A proportion of the starch consumed as cereal grain passes undigested to...
متن کاملBehavioural changes in stabled horses given nontherapeutic levels of virginiamycin.
Abnormal behaviour commonly develops in intensively managed horses. A possible cause is the change in diet occurring when the horse is stabled. An experiment was performed to examine this possibility by manipulating the diet with the feed supplement virginiamycin, as Founderguard. During 4 weeks, 18 horses were fed diets ranging from hay alone to concentrate plus hay in the ratio of 3:1. The ra...
متن کاملFeeding grape seed extract to horses: effects on health, intake and digestion.
A feeding trial involving four Thoroughbred race horses was undertaken to establish whether inclusion of grape seed extract (GSE) in the diet of horses undergoing mild exercise had any effects on their general health, intake and digestion. Supplementation with GSE had no effect on either feed or water intake of the horses and the supplement was readily palatable to the horses at all levels of i...

Seventy-nine continental crossbred beef heifers (524.4 ± 41.68 kg BW), 16 of which were ruminally cannulated, were used in a 53-d experiment with a generalized randomized block design to assess the effects of barley grain (BG), corn silage (CS), and corn distillers' grain (DG) offered in a free-choice diet on feeding behavior and ruminal fermentation. Treatments were total mixed ration (TMR) co...
