Bandgap optimization of two-dimensional photonic crystals using semidefinite programming and subspace methods

چکیده
In this paper, we consider the optimal design of photonic crystal band structures for twodimensional square lattices. The mathematical formulation of the band gap optimization problem leads to an infinite-dimensional Hermitian eigenvalue optimization problem parametrized by the dielectric material and the wave vector. To make the problem tractable, the original eigenvalue problem is discretized using the finite element method into a series of finite-dimensional eigenvalue problems for multiple values of the wave vector parameter. The resulting optimization problem is large-scale and non-convex, with low regularity and non-differentiable objective. By restricting to appropriate eigenspaces, we reduce the large-scale non-convex optimization problem via reparametrization to a sequence of small-scale convex semidefinite programs (SDPs) for which modern SDP solvers can be efficiently applied. Numerical results are presented for both transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) polarizations at several frequency bands. The optimized structures exhibit patterns which go far beyond typical physical intuition on periodic media design.

متن کاملFabrication of 2-D photonic crystals using azo polymers
In this paper, we have reported the fabrication of two-dimensional photonic crystals, using a direct writing method in azo polymers. Periodic structures have been fabricated using the interference patterns of two coherent laser beams. The frequency response of the initial one-dimensional structure shows an attenuation of 19.3dB at 1554nm. The twodimensional structure shows 8.3dB and 11.3dB of a...
متن کاملDesigning Phononic Crystal with Convex Optimization
Designing phononic crystals by creating frequency bandgaps is of particular interest in elastic and acoustic metamaterial engineering. Mathematically, the problem of optimizing the frequency bandgaps is often nonconvex, as it requires the maximization of the higher indexed eigenfrequency and the minimization of the lower indexed eigenfrequency. A novel algorithm [1] has been previously develope...
متن کاملSimulation Design for Rutile-TiO2 Nanostructures with a Large Complete-Photonic Bandgap in Electrolytes
The photonic bands of various TiO2 2D photonic crystals, i.e., cylindrical, square and hexagonal columns connected with/without walls and filled with acetonitrile, were investigated from the perspective of dye-sensitized solar cells. The finite-difference time-domain methods revealed that two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals with rods connected with walls composed of TiO2 and electrolytes had...
