Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease

چکیده
Abnormalities of the lower oesophageal sphincter may facilitate excessive reflux of gastric contents including acid and sometimes bile from the stomach into the oesophagus. Bile is particularly caustic and reflux of duodenal contents is more troublesome than reflux of gastric contents alone. There is little correlation between severity of symptoms and findings on endoscopy. Sometimes drugs that have not been taken with an adequate amount of water stick in the oesophagus and are slowly released causing oesophagitis. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and doxycycline are especially notorious and must be taken with adequate water. Bisphosphonates can be extremely troublesome. Oesophageal reflux is recognised as a risk factor for oesophageal cancer.

Is there any association between myocardial infarction, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and acid-suppressing drugs?
BACKGROUND A link between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and coronary heart disease has been suggested. AIM To estimate the incidence of myocardial infarction in patients with newly diagnosed gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in comparison with that in the general population. METHODS A population-based cohort study was performed in the UK. Patients aged 18-79 years with a first diagnosis...
متن کاملClinical and pH-metric characteristics of gastro-oesophageal reflux secondary to cows' milk protein allergy.
AIMS The primary aim was to assess whether there were differences in symptoms, laboratory data, and oesophageal pH-metry between infants with primary gastro-oesophageal reflux and those with reflux secondary to cows' milk protein allergy (CMPA). PATIENTS AND METHODS 96 infants (mean(SD) age 7.8(2.0) months) with either primary gastro-oesophageal reflux, reflux with CMPA, CMPA only, or none of...
متن کاملSleep phase and gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants at possible risk of SIDS.
The association between gastro-oesophageal reflux and sleep state in 24 infants with confirmed or suspected gastro-oesophageal reflux was studied by monitoring both the pH in the lower oesophagus and polygraphic tracings made during sleep at night. Gastro-oesophageal reflux during the night was confirmed in 20 infants. Three hundred and sixteen precipitous drops of more than one unit of pH were...

OBJECTIVES To ascertain the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and its association with the disease. DESIGN Systematic review of studies reporting the prevalence of H pylori in patients with and without gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. DATA SOURCES Four electronic databases, searched to November 2001, experts, pharmaceutical companies, and...
متن کاملGastric emptying with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
The time taken for gastric emptying of a liquid (milk) or a semi-liquid (pudding) meal was evaluated in 477 infants and children. These patients were referred for suspected gastro-oesophageal reflux and underwent gastro-oesophageal scintigraphy, prolonged oesophageal pH study, manometric evaluation of the lower oesophageal sphincter pressure, and fibreoptic endoscopy. No difference in gastric e...
متن کاملGastro-oesophageal reflux in near-miss sudden infant death syndrome or suspected recurrent aspiration.
We have compared barium swallow with a radionuclide gastro-oesophageal scintigraphy (milk scan) method of detecting gastro-oesophageal reflux in 26 infants. In 17 cases, presenting as near miss sudden infant death syndrome, reflux was detected in 2 by barium swallow and in 8 by scintigraphy. In the remaining 9 infants with suspected pulmonary aspiration, reflux was demonstrated by barium swallo...
