A Study of Oxygen Absorption and Catalase Production During Growth of Chaetomium Globosum on Cotton Fiber and Yarn.

چکیده
Damage to cotton by micro-organisms causes a serious loss to the cotton farmer, manufacturer, and consumer. For this reason studies are in progress in the Department of Agriculture on the growth and effect of various micro-organisms which cause deterioration of cotton. In an earlier investigation in this laboratory by Rogers, Wheeler, and Humfeld (1940) the growth of Chaetomium globosum Kunze on cotton duck was followed by measuring the evolution of carbon dioxide by absorption in potassium hydroxide and subsequent titration. The present paper discusses the rate of absorption of oxygen by C. globosum growing on cotton fiber and on cotton yarn as measured by means of the Warburg apparatus (1934). This apparatus, which was developed for studying the respiration of tumor growths and used for measuring the rate of respiration of micro-organisms, has not been employed previously for measuring the rate of growth of fungi or other orgamsms on a cotton substrate. The enzyme, catalase, is produced by the chaetomium during its growth. The amount of catalase formed may be considered a measure of the growth of the fungus. In this paper the quantity of catalase produced by the organism on the cotton fiber and cotton yarn is also reported.

Study on the Damaging of Dyed Cotton Fibers with Direct Dye in Spinning Processes and its Effect on the Properties of Cotton Mélange Yarn
The influence of dyeing and spinning on the characteristics of cotton fibers and its impact on the properties of cotton mélange yarn has been investigated. Grey cotton fibers with mean fiber length and fineness of 29 mm and 4.2 micronair were pre-treated and dyed. Three ring yarns were spun from 100 % grey cotton (R.R.Y), 50-50 % blend of dyed and grey cotton (M.R.Y) and 100 % dyed cotton fiber...
متن کاملGrowth and Mycotoxin Production by Chaetomium globosum Is Favored in a Neutral pH
Chaetomium globosum is frequently isolated in water-damaged buildings and produces two mycotoxins called chaetoglobosins A and C when cultured on building material. In this study, the influence of ambient pH on the growth of C. globosum was examined on an artificial medium. This fungus was capable of growth on potato dextrose agar ranging in pH from 4.3 to 9.4 with optimal growth and chaetoglob...
متن کاملEstimation of Open-End Cotton Yarn Strenght from Fiber Physical Characteristics
Physical properties of cotton yarns are affected by the characteristics of cotton fibers such as fineness, length, maturity and strength. This relationship has been worked out by means of multivariable regression and stepwise method for an open-end spun (NeC 20) cotton yarn. Moreover, with the help of linear programming, it was made possible to determine the percentage of different cottons in t...

متن کاملYarn tenacity modeling using artificial neural networks and development of a decision support system based on genetic algorithms
Yarn tenacity is one of the most important properties in yarn production. This paper addresses modeling of yarn tenacity as well as optimally determining the amounts of the effective inputs to produce yarn with desired tenacity. The artificial neural network is used as a suitable structure for tenacity modeling of cotton yarn with 30 Ne. As the first step for modeling, the empirical data is col...
