چکیده

In this paper, we discuss Lepore and Stone’s account of metaphor which is based on three of Davidson’s proposals: (i) the rejection of metaphorical meanings; (ii) the rejection of metaphors as conveying metaphorical propositional contents; and (iii) the defence of analogy as the key mechanism for understanding metaphors. Lepore and Stone defend these proposals because the non-sceptic strategy on metaphorical meanings, characterized in general by the negation of (i) and (ii), fails to come to grips with neither the power of metaphor nor the explanatory resources of traditional pragmatic theories. In this paper we show not only how our non-sceptic account of metaphorical meaning as a variety of ad hoc concept eliminates these diffi culties but also how it can solve two related diffi culties that appear in Lepore and Stone’s account. One of them is that Lepore and Stone’s account involves the possibility of interpreting all metaphorical utterances literally (metaphors only have one meaning, the ordinary meaning) as a criterion of metaphorical identifi cation; the other is that their proposal is not suited for explaining how speakers can agree or disagree when they use metaphorical utterances.

Metaphorical Conceptualization of SPORT Through TERRITORY as a Vehicle

WAR as a vehicle and Sport Is War as a conceptual metaphor (CM) seem inadequate to account metaphorically for SPORT. To cater for an inclusive vehicle/CM, we selected WIN and LOSS lexicon from the news coverage of Brazil’s football team loss to Germany and tested them through the Corpus of Contemporary American English. Then, the data were studied through the 3 stages of metaphor research. In t...

“In the murky depths of my mind”: Towards a Situation-Based Discourse Semantics for Metaphor

In this talk we will present work towards a semantics for metaphor which is inspired by the original situation semantics notion of meaning (Barwise and Perry 1983) as a relation between an utterance (or discourse) situation and a described situation. We will show how this view of meaning, with certain modifications, enables us to address some of the very difficult problems of providing a semant...

Mixing Metaphors

Mixed metaphors have been neglected in recent metaphor research. This paper suggests that such neglect is short-sighted. Though mixing is a more complex phenomenon than straight metaphors, the same kinds of reasoning and knowledge structures are required. This paper provides an analysis of both parallel and serial mixed metaphors within the framework of an AI system which is already capable of ...

Insuring against loss of evidence in game-theoretic probability

Statistical testing can be framed as a repetitive game between two players, Forecaster and Sceptic. On each round, Forecaster sets prices for various gambles, and Sceptic chooses which gambles to make. If Sceptic multiplies by a large factor the capital he puts at risk, he has evidence against Forecaster’s ability. His capital at the end of each round is a measure of his evidence against Foreca...

Unrealistic scenarios, metaphorical blends and rhetorical strategies across genres

In this paper I discuss a form of metaphorical creativity that involves the introduction of „unrealistic‟ scenarios for rhetorical purposes in expository and argumentative texts. I primarily account for the nature and function of this form of creativity in terms of Fauconnier and Turner‟s (2002) notion of Blending, with some references to Conceptual Metaphor theory (Lakoff and Johnson 1980, 199...
