Constraints on Light Pseudoscalars Implied by Tests of the Gravitational Inverse-Square Law

چکیده
The exchange of light pseudoscalars between fermions leads to a spinindependent potential in order g4, where g is the Yukawa pseudoscalar-fermion coupling constant. This potential gives rise to detectable violations of both the weak equivalence principle (WEP) and the gravitational inverse-square law (ISL), even if g is quite small. We show that when previously derived WEP constraints are combined with those arising from ISL tests, a direct experimental limit on the Yukawa coupling of light pseudoscalars to neutrons can be inferred for the first time (g2 n/4π ∼ 1.6×10−7), along with a new (and significantly improved) limit on the coupling of light pseudoscalars to protons. 04.80.Ce, 14.80.-j Typeset using REVTEX

Tests of the Gravitational Inverse-square Law
We review recent experimental tests of the gravitational inverse-square law and the wide variety of theoretical considerations that suggest the law may break down in experimentally accessible regions.
متن کاملSub-millimeter Tests of the Gravitational Inverse Square Law
Sub-mm tests of the gravitational inverse-square law are interesting from several quite different perspectives. This paper discusses work by the Eöt-Wash group performed since the publication of our initial result in February 2001. We find no evidence for short-range Yukawa interactions. Our results provide an upper limit of 200 μm on the size of the largest “extra” dimension, and for the unifi...
متن کاملTests of the gravitational inverse-square law below the dark-energy length scale.
We conducted three torsion-balance experiments to test the gravitational inverse-square law at separations between 9.53 mm and 55 microm, probing distances less than the dark-energy length scale lambda(d)=[4 -root](variant Planck's over 2pic/rho(d) approximately 85 microm. We find with 95% confidence that the inverse-square law holds (|alpha|<or=1) down to a length scale lambda=56 microm and th...
متن کاملBehavior correction of the inverse square law in irradiation room for volumetric source and detector
The inverse-square law is used to calculate the radiation flux at difference distances from the source. This law is applied for point source and point detector in vacuum. This research aims to study the point behavior of volumetric source and detector by undertaking required corrections on inverse-square law through the elimination of scattered neutrons contribution. The measurements have been ...
متن کاملDark matter vs. modifications of the gravitational inverse-square law. Results from planetary motion in the solar system
Dark matter or modifications of the Newtonian inverse-square law in the solar system are studied with accurate planetary astrometric data. From extra-perihelion precession and possible changes in the third Kepler’s law, we get an upper limit on the local dark matter density, ρDM <∼ 3×10 −16 kg/m3 at the 2-σ confidence level. Variations in the 1/r behavior are considered in the form of either a ...
