Cardiff's tropical disease: cercarial dermatitis.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION ROATH LAKE is a large artificial lake situated in one of the municipal parks of Cardiff, and well known as a pleasure-spot, for angling, boating, and for its waterfowl." Roath Park, in which. the lake is situated, is also noted for its recreational facilities and splendid botanical gardens, which include one of the finest rose gardens in Great Britain. An attraction of the lake up until 1949, now largely forgotten, was the bathing pool in its south-east corner, adjacent to the dam. The changing-cubicles and spring-boards have been removed, and the concrete embankment which formerly was the edge of the pool is now used for angling contests. The purpose of this paper is to review the investigation into, and discovery of, the cause of a health hazard occurring at the bathing pool in 1928.

Prevalence of Cercarial Dermatitis among Paddy-Field Workers in Central Areas of Mazandaran Province
Abstract Background and Objective: Cercarial dermatitis (CD) or swimmer’s itch is a severe inflammatory reaction caused by penetration of the skin by avian and herbivorous schistosomes, esp genus Trichobilharzia. Since both intermediate and final host of this parasite exist in North of Iran, we aimed at determining the prevalence of cercarial dermatitis among paddy-field workers in Central a...
متن کاملSchistosomes causing cercarial dermatitis: a mini-review of current trends in systematics and of host specificity and pathogenicity.
The human infection known under the names cercarial dermatitis or swimmers' itch is generally associated with swimming in lakes all over the world, however, a number of outbreaks of cercarial dermatitis developing in salt or brackish waters are also reported. The disease presents as allergic reaction which is able to trap and eliminate the parasites in the skin. However, the infection can be li...
متن کاملA study on cercarial dermatitis in Khuzestan province, south western Iran
BACKGROUND Cercarial dermatitis' or swimmer's itch' is an itchy inflammatory response to the penetration of the skin by non-human schistosome parasites. In the hot season, (May to September) in Khuzestan province in the south west of Iran, swimming in canals and agriculture activities in swampy areas are common. متن کاملCercarial Dermatitis Transmitted by Exotic Marine Snail
Cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) is caused by the penetration of human skin by cercariae of schistosome parasites that develop in and are released from snail hosts. Cercarial dermatitis is frequently acquired in freshwater habitats, and less commonly in marine or estuarine waters. To investigate reports of a dermatitis outbreak in San Francisco Bay, California, we surveyed local snails for...
متن کاملAntibody responses induced by Trichobilharzia regenti antigens in murine and human hosts exhibiting cercarial dermatitis
Cercariae of bird schistosomes (genus Trichobilharzia) are able to penetrate the skin of mammals (noncompatible hosts), including humans, and cause a Th2-associated inflammatory cutaneous reaction termed cercarial dermatitis. The present study measured the antibody reactivity and antigen specificity of sera obtained after experimental infection of mice and natural infection of humans. Sera from...
