چکیده

In this study, a GIS-based tool has been developed to evaluate and predict coastal water quality issues for the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). The developed system consists of three key components. The first component is a database of hydrodynamic and water quality data collected from various public domains. This database is linked with the GIS for efficient retrieval, display, and analysis of historic hydrodynamic and water quality conditions. The second component is the integration of the GIS with a hydrodynamic-water quality numerical model. The system is customized to handle the model pre-processing and post-processing requirements through the GIS interface. Finally, the third component is an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) tool. The EIA module is designed to examine water quality conditions in spatial context and more specifically, to identify the region subjected to the most severe water quality impact. The module combines spatial layers of various water quality parameters, whereas created from field data or generated from model results, into a single spatial layer of water quality index using the GIS Map Algebra technique.

Investigating the Impacts of Landuse-landcover (LULC) Change in the Pearl River Delta Region on Water Quality in the Pearl River Estuary and Hong Kong's Coast

Water quality information in the coastal region of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) is of great concern to the local community. Due to great landuse-landcover (LULC) changes with rapid industrialization and urbanization in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, water quality in the PRE has worsened during the last 20 years. Frequent red tide and harmful algal blooms have occurred in the...

Coupled Physical-Biological Model for the Pearl River Estuary: A Phosphate Limited Subtropical Ecosystem

The Pearl River, with an annual mean discharge rate of ~ 10,000 ms, has profound dynamic and ecological influences on the northern shelf of the South China Sea. A coastal ocean model is set up to simulate the circulation in the Pearl River Estuary and the neighboring coastal regions. In winter the Guangdong Coastal Current, which flows southwestward and passes the mouth of the estuary, forces t...

Survey of water quality in Moradbeik river basis on WQI index by GIS

Background: Survey of pollution and evaluation of water quality in rivers with Oregon Water Quality Index (OWQI) and GIS are effective tools for management of the impact of environmental water resources. The information in calculating the WQI of Moradbeik river allowed us to take our tests results and make a scientific conclusion about the quality of water. GIS can be a powerful tool for develo...

Evaluating Production of Cyclopentyl Tetraethers by Marine Group II Euryarchaeota in the Pearl River Estuary and Coastal South China Sea: Potential Impact on the TEX86 Paleothermometer

TEX86 [TetraEther indeX of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) with 86 carbon atoms] has been widely applied to reconstruct (paleo-) sea surface temperature. Marine Group I (MG-I) Thaumarchaeota were thought to be the primary source of GDGTs constituting the TEX86 formula; however, recent research has suggested that Marine Group II (MG-II) Euryarchaeota may also contribute significant...

Interactive comment on “Contribution of Marine Group II Euryarchaeota to cyclopentyl tetraethers in the Pearl River estuary and coastal South China Sea: impact on the TEX86 paleothermometer” by J. X. Wang et al

Reply to general comments: We acknowledge that this reviewer’s comments are important and thoughtful. We have done makeup experiments to quantify the abundances of MG I (AOA) and total DNA from the same filter samples (Table 1 and Fig. 5). The qPCR date exhibited that MG II was statistically higher (duplicate experiments) than MG I in the mixing water and seawater, which suggests that MG II pre...
