چکیده

In this paper, we describe a robust method for the estimation of curvature on a triangle mesh, where this mesh is a discrete approximation of a piecewise smooth surface. The proposed method avoids the computationally expensive process of surface fitting and instead employs normal voting to achieve robust results. This method detects crease discontinuities on the surface to improve estimates near those creases. Using a voting scheme, the algorithm estimates both principal curvatures and principal directions for smooth patches. The entire process requires one user parameter—the voting neighborhood size, which is a function of sampling density, feature size, and measurement noise. We present results for both synthetic and real data and compare these results to an existing algorithm developed by Taubin (1995).

Normal Vector Voting: Crease Detection and Curvature Estimation on Large, Noisy Meshes

This paper describes a robust method for crease detection and curvature estimation on large, noisy triangle meshes. We assume that these meshes are approximations of piecewise-smooth surfaces derived from range or medical imaging systems and thus may exhibit measurement or even registration noise. The proposed algorithm, which we call normal vector voting, uses an ensemble of triangles in the g...

Surface modeling using multi-view range and color images

This paper presents a framework of surface modeling from multi-view range and color images. The input to the algorithms are pairs of triangle meshes and color images, and each pair is obtained by a single-view scanning. In the proposed framework, the triangle meshes from raw data are first processed by the novel surface denoising algorithm based on area decreasing flow, which avoids the difficu...

Triangle Mesh-Based Surface Modeling Using Adaptive Smoothing and Implicit Texture Integration

This paper presents a framework of surface modeling from multi-view range data. The input to the algorithms are triangle meshes, each of which is from a single view range scan. The triangle meshes generated from raw data are first processed by the proposed area decreasing flow for surface denoising. Although the proposed flow is mathematically equivalent to the mean curvature flow, it can avoid...

Curvature tensor computation by piecewise surface interpolation

Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to ...

Curvature estimation scheme for triangle meshes using biquadratic Bézier patches

When dealing with triangle meshes, it is often important to compute curvature information for the purposes of feature recognition, segmentation, or shape analysis. Since a triangle mesh is a piecewise linear surface, curvature has to be estimated. Several different schemes have been proposed, both discrete and continuous, i.e. based on fitting surfaces locally. This paper compares commonly used...
