Female Cowbird Song Perception: Evidence for Plasticity of Preference
نویسندگان
چکیده
The goal of the research reported here was to look for evidence of modifiability of preference for male song in female cowbirds, Molothrus ater. To this end, we investigated whether social experience affected the breadth and consistency of females playback preferences for geographic variants of male song. In three experiments, we varied female cowbirds exposure to males. Wild-caught juvenile females showed a preference for local song in their first year when housed without males in sound-attenuating chambers, as we had found previously with adult females. But we found that neither adult nor juvenile females showed a preference for local over distant song after they had been housed in large, outdoor aviaries with other females but without male residents. Aviary housing with local males did lead to preferences for local songs. These data represent the first unqualified evidence that adult and juvenile female cowbird preferences for song are modifiable. These data add to the growing body of literature suggesting that receivers, as well as signalers, rely on learning during development of their communication system. Corresponding author: Meredith J. Female Cowbird Song Perception: Evidence for Different Developmental Programs within the same Subspecies
, Female Molothrus ater from Oklahoma at the subspecies border with M.a. obscurus were tested for their discrimination of songs from their native area and from Austin, Texas. This 400-km distance is characterized by a structural shift in the male cowbird's inclusion of the mid-song element, a structure found in the songs of Austin and the more southern M.a. obscurus populations but not in the s...
متن کاملFirst Evidence of Conspecific Brood Parasitism and Egg Ejection in Song Sparrows, with Comments on Methods Sufficient to Document These Behaviors
Conspecific brood parasitism occurs in many songbird species but has not been reported in Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia). In three separate study areas where breeding Song Sparrows experience heavy nest predation pressure and Brownheaded Cowbird (Molothrus ater) parasitism, we observed six instances in which newly laid eggs were attributable to female Song Sparrows other than the nest owners...
متن کاملEnriching Cowbird Song by Social Deprivation
Male cowbirds, juveniles and adults, were maintained in one of four condi tions: (a) visual and auditory deprivation from males, (b) visual but not audi tory deprivation, (c) social isolation, and (d) full contact with males. Their songs in the breeding season were tested with captive female cowbirds. The females responded with copulation postures most often to the songs of the males reared i...

Social behaviours such as mate choice require context-specific responses, often with evolutionary consequences. Increasing evidence indicates that the behavioural plasticity associated with mate choice involves learning. For example, poeciliids show age-dependent changes in female preference functions and express synaptic-plasticity-associated molecular markers during mate choice. Here, we test...
متن کاملThe inheritance of female preference functions in a mate recognition system.
Mate recognition systems (MRSs) play a major role in sexual selection and speciation, yet few studies have analysed both male and female components in detail. Here, female preference functions have been characterized for the tettigoniid bushcricket Ephippiger ephippiger, and the inheritance of male song and female preference functions followed in crosses between subspecies. Songs are disproport...
