چکیده

DIRECT is a project to obtain directly the distances to two Local Group galaxies, M31 and M33, which occupy a crucial position near the bottom of the cosmological distance ladder. As the first step of the DIRECT project we have searched for detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and new Cepheids in the M31 and M33 galaxies with 1m-class telescopes. In this eighth paper we present a catalog of variable stars discovered in the data from the followup observations of DEB system D33J013337. Observatory 2.1m telescope. In our search covering an area of 108 ′ 2 we have found 895 variable stars: 96 eclipsing binaries, 349 Cepheids, and 450 other periodic, possible long period or non-periodic variables. Of these variables 612 are newly discovered. Their light curves were extracted using the ISIS image subtraction package. For 77% of the variables we present light curves in standard V and B magnitudes, with the remaining 23% expressed in units of differential flux. We have discovered a population of first overtone Cepheid candidates and for six of them we present strong arguments in favor of this interpretation. The catalog of variables, as well as their photometry (about 9.2 × 10 4 BV measurements) and finding charts, is available electronically via anonymous ftp and the World Wide Web. The complete set of the CCD frames is available upon request. Subject headings: binaries: eclipsing – Cepheids – distance scale – galaxies: individual (M33) – stars: variables: other 1 Based on observations obtained with the 2.1m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

We have undertaken several projects with the purpose of determining accurate distances to nearby galaxies to calibrate the extragalactic distance scale. Specifically, I describe the DIRECT project which aims to derive the distance to M31 and M33 directly, using detached eclipsing binaries and the Baade-Wesselink method for Cepheids. I also present a " hybrid " method of discovering Cepheids wit...

The observed luminosity distributions of X-ray sources suggest the presence of several populations of X-ray binaries in the nearby galaxies. Each population probably has a different formation and evolutionary history, depending on the intrinsic properties of the sources and the host environment. The features seen in the Log N (> S) – Log S plots for different galactic components and for differe...

Interstellar and atmospheric extinctions redden the observational pho-tometric data and they should be handled rigorously. This paper simulates the effect of reddening for the modest case of two main sequence T1 = 6500K and T2 = 5500K components of a detached eclipsing binary system. It is shown that simply subtracting a constant from measured magnitudes (the approach often used in the field of...

Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: OO Aql, CC Com, V345 Gem, XY Leo, AM Leo, V1010 Oph, V2612 Oph, XX Sex, W UMa, and XY UMa. Most of these binaries have been observed spectroscopically before, but our data are of higher quality and consistency than in the previous studies. While most of the stud...

This review summarizes the properties of the stellar population in bulges as observed in nearby or distant spiral galaxies. It gives a particular emphasis to the comparison with elliptical galaxies, when possible. The criteria of sample selection and choices in data analysis are addressed when they may be involved in discrepant results reached by different studies.
