Irregular Scattering of Particles Confined to Ring-Bounded Cavities

چکیده

The classical motion of a Ii"ee particle that scatters elastically from ring-bounded cavities is analyzed nunaerically. When the ring is a smooth circle the scattering follows a regular and periodic pattern. However, for rings composed of N scatrefers the Ilow is irregular, of Lyapunov type. The Lyapunov exponent is found to depend logarithmically with N, which is consistent with the theoretical derivation of Chernov for polygon-shaped billiard systems. The escape time from cavities bounded by a ring of N separated scatterers is demonstrated to follow a geometric distribution as a function of the aperture size. An empirical scaling is proposed between the Lyapunov exponent, the escape time, and N.

Log-Normal and Mono-Sized Particles’ Packing into a Bounded Region

Many systems can be modeled with hard and various size spheres, therefore packing and geometrical structures of such sets are of great importance. In this paper, rigid spherical particles distributed in different sizes are randomly packed in confined spaces, using a parallel algorithm. Mersenne Twister algorithm was used to generate pseudorandom numbers for initial coordination of particles. Di...

Deviations from plane-wave Mie scattering and precise retrieval of refractive index for a single spherical particle in an optical cavity.

The extinction cross-sections of individual, optically confined aerosol particles with radii of a micrometer or less can, in principle, be measured using cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). However, when the particle radius is comparable in magnitude to the wavelength of light stored in a high-finesse cavity, the phenomenological cross-section retrieved from a CRDS experiment depends on the l...

Aerosol Optical Extinction Measurements Using a Pulsed Laser

A recently developed portable instrument, the pulsed cavity ring-down transmissometer/nephelometer tandem (CRDT/N) allows for the in situ measurement of optical properties of aerosols. An Nd:YAG laser excited CRDT (λ = 532, 1064 nm) is shown to be capable of sensitively measuring the aerosol extinction coefficient (bext) at the two wavelengths simultaneously. Adding a nephelometer yields a meas...

A note on the socle of certain types of f-rings

For any reduced commutative $f$-ring with identity and bounded inversion, we show that a condition which is obviously necessary for the socle of the ring to coincide with the socle of its bounded part, is actually also sufficient. The condition is that every minimal ideal of the ring consist entirely of bounded elements. It is not too stringent, and is satisfied, for instance, by rings of ...

First observations of the Phoebe ring in optical light

The Phoebe ring, Saturn’s largest and faintest ring, lies far beyond the planet’s well-known main rings. It is primarily sourced by collisions with Saturn’s largest irregular satellite Phoebe, perhaps through stochastic macroscopic collisions, or through more steady micrometeoroid bombardment. The ring was discovered with the Spitzer Space Telescope at 24 lm and has a normal optical depth of 2 ...
