Abstract—This paper proposes a new method for adaptive beamforming using uniform concentric circular array (UCCA) that has nearly frequency invariant (FI) characteristics. The basic principle of FI UCCA is to transform the received signals to the phase mode and compensate for the frequency dependency of the individual phase mode through the use of a digital beamforming network. The far field pattern of the array is then determined by a set of weights and it is approximately invariant over a wide range of frequencies. Therefore, the minimum variance beamforming (MVB) approach can be used to adapt the small set of weights, as if it is a narrowband array, Design examples and simulation are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed FI UCCA in broadband DOA estimation and beamforming.

A Comparison between Circular and Hexagonal Array Geometries for Smart Antenna Systems Using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

In this paper, circular and hexagonal array geometries for smart antenna applications are compared. Uniform circular (UCA) and hexagonal arrays (UHA) with 18 half-wave dipole elements are examined; also planar (2 concentric rings of radiators) uniform circular (PUCA) and hexagonal arrays (PUHA) are considered. The effect of rotating the outer ring of the PUCA is studied. In our analysis, the me...

Analysis of Uniform Circular Arrays for Adaptive Beamforming Applications Using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

In this article, the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to calculate the complex excitations, amplitudes and phases, of the adaptive circular array elements. To illustrate the performance of this method for steering a signal in the desired direction and imposing nulls in the direction of interfering signals by controlling the complex excitation of each array element, two types of arr...

Adaptive beamforming in row-column addressed arrays for 3D ultrasound imaging

In recent years, to reduce the complexity of implementation, the use of 2D arrays with restricted row-column addressing has been considered for 3D ultrasound imaging. In this paper, two methods of adaptive beamforming based on the minimum variance method are represented in such a way that the computational load is much less than using the full adaptive beamforming method. In both proposed metho...
