Intermittent Exotropia: Management Options and Surgical Outcomes
نویسنده
چکیده
Background: This paper reflects an effort to recreate a modern analysis of a 1985 study on surgical outcomes of intermittent exotropia. Post-surgical results are reported as functional, motor, cosmetic, and unsuccessful. Modern optometric approaches to management of intermittent exotropia are also discussed. Methods: A literature review of 17 acceptable papers (dating from 1990-2011) on the outcome of strabismus surgery for intermittent exotropia was conducted. Search words included: intermittent exotropia, strabismus, strabismus surgery, and strabismus surgical outcomes. Results: No papers exactly fit the rigorous standards of the original 1985 study regarding surgical outcomes for intermittent exotropia. Some modern papers did not differentiate between exo deviations (exophoria versus exotropia) or strabismic deviations (esotropia versus exotropia). Not one study reported an absence of post-surgical strabismus and concomitant functional improvement. However, in papers citing functional results only, 62.3% of patients had successful postsurgical outcomes. Conclusions: Data from the 1985 study on surgical outcomes of intermittent exotropia is impossible to recreate in 2011. Interestingly, more surgeons/authors in modern studies show an interest in post-surgical functional vision than in the 1985 version. Very few modern studies analyze the use of vision therapy concomitantly with strabismus surgery. This is a potential area of future interest.

Comparison of Long-term Surgical Outcomes of Two-muscle Surgery in Basic-type Intermittent Exotropia: Bilateral versus Unilateral
PURPOSE To compare long-term surgical outcomes after bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) and unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (RR) for the treatment of basic-type intermittent exotropia. METHODS Consecutive patients who underwent BLR or RR for treatment of intermittent exotropia between 1999 and 2010 and underwent ≥5 years of follow-up were recruited for this s...

Among the types of exotropia in childhood, intermittent exotropia (IXT) has been reported to be the most common type. In a population-based cohort, the prevalence of exotropia has been reported to be 1%, with convergence insufficiency and intermittent exotropia being the commonest of the subtypes. A recent large population-based cohort of 5831 preschool children reports a prevalence of 3.2% of ...

PURPOSE To describe the long-term surgical outcomes of bilateral lateral rectus recession in patients with intermittent exotropia. METHODS Retrospective review of 18 patients diagnosed with intermittent exotropia between 1995 and 2005 who underwent surgical treatment in the Ramon y Cajal Hospital. RESULTS Of the 18 patients with intermittent exotropia, 50% were basic subtype. All of them un...
متن کاملLong-term outcomes of unilateral lateral rectus recession versus recess-resect for intermittent exotropia of 20-25 prism diopters
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare surgical outcomes of unilateral lateral rectus recession (ULR) and unilateral recess-resect (RR) for intermittent exotropia of 20-25 prism diopters (PD). METHODS In this retrospective study, ULR was performed on 82 patients and RR on 98 patients for the treatment of intermittent exotropia of 20-25 PD with a follow-up period of 24 months or m...
متن کاملSurgical Outcomes of Intermittent Exotropia as a Function of Strabismic Angle
PURPOSE To analyze postoperative results of intermittent exotropia as a function of the difference in strabismic angles measured immediately and another time prior to the surgery. METHODS We reviewed the clinical records of intermittent exotropia patients who received surgery and had differences greater than or equal to 10 prism diopters (PD) between the last preoperative measurement of strab...
