چکیده

The kinetic theory of a self-gravitating system is considered in the BhatnagerGross-Krook approximation to the kinetic equation. This approach offers a unique and tractable setup for studying the central, collision-dominated region of the system, as well as its almost collisionless outer part. Stationary non-equilibrium states of the system are considered and several different self-similar solutions are identified.

Vlavov and Poisson equations in the context of self-gravitating systems

We present Vlasov’s equation and its association with Poisson’s equation in the context of modelling self-gravitating systems such as Globular Clusters or Galaxies. We first review the classical hypotheses of the model. We continue with a presentation of the Hamilton-Morrison structure of Vlasov’s equation to study the equilibrium and the stability of self-gravitating systems. Finally, we prese...

Collisional relaxation of two-dimensional self-gravitating systems.

Systems with long range interactions present generically the formation of quasistationary long-lived nonequilibrium states. These states relax to Boltzmann equilibrium following a dynamics which is not well understood. In this paper we study this process in two-dimensional inhomogeneous self-gravitating systems. Using the Chandrasekhar-or local-approximation we write a simple approximate kineti...

A Gas-Kinetic Stability Analysis of Self-Gravitating and Collisional Particulate Disks with Application to Saturn’s Rings

Linear theory is used to determine the stability of the self-gravitating, rapidly (and nonuniformly) rotating, two-dimensional, and collisional particulate disk against small-amplitude gravity perturbations. A gas-kinetic theory approach is used by exploring the combined system of the Boltzmann and the Poisson equations. The effects of physical collisions between particles are taken into accoun...

On the clustering phase transition in self-gravitating N-body systems

The thermodynamic behaviour of self-gravitating N -body systems has been worked out by borrowing a standard method from Molecular Dynamics: the time averages of suitable quantities are numerically computed along the dynamical trajectories to yield thermodynamic observables. The link between dynamics and thermodynamics is made in the microcanonical ensemble of statistical mechanics. The dynamics...

Kinetic and hydrodynamic models of chemotactic aggregation

We derive general kinetic and hydrodynamic models of chemotactic aggregation that describe certain features of the morphogenesis of biological colonies (like bacteria, amoebae, endothelial cells or social insects). Starting from a stochastic model defined in terms of N coupled Langevin equations, we derive a nonlinear mean field Fokker-Planck equation governing the evolution of the distribution...
