University of Melbourne Symposium on Medical History 21–23 May, 1970

A symposium will be held in the Department of Medical History, University of Melbourne, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the 21, 22 and 23 May, 1970 and a cordial invitation is extended to those wishing to attend. Professor Donald O'Malley, Department of Medical History, University of California, Los Angeles, has accepted an invitation to be present and give a paper. One day has been set aside to honour Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870) as it will be the centenary of his death. In conjunction with the Section of Medical History, Australian Medical Association (Victorian Branch), a half-day will be devoted to aspects of medical history in Australia. Other subjects to be discussed include eighteenth-century anatomical manikins, early lithotomy operations and instruments, the development of the ophthalmoscope and Australian holdings of historical medical books. Adequate time will be allowed for discussion and audience participation. Among the speakers will be Professor C. D. O'Malley, Professor Sir Edward Ford, Professor K. F. Russell, Associate Professor B. Gandevia, Dr. F. M. C. Forster, Dr. W. Counsell, Dr. L. Murphy, Dr. H. F. Bettinger, Professor H. D. Attwood and Professor H. A. F. Dudley.
