چکیده

Many documents that can be found in the World Wide Web include some kind of geographical information, often in an implicit way. The use of resources like gazetteers and geographical ontologies can improve the results in Geographical Information Retrieval. Unfortunately, the construction of such ontologies is a long and laborious process; therefore, building an ontology in a semi-automatical way exploiting multiple sources is an interesting and useful task. Our work is focused on the integration of data from gazetteers (GNS and GNIS), the WordNet general domain ontology, and Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The result of our effort is an ontology implemented as a set of Prolog clauses, that can be easily expanded with both new data and relationships.

Ontology-Based Spatial Query Expansion in Information Retrieval

Ontologies play a key role in Semantic Web research. A common use of ontologies in Semantic Web is to enrich the current Web resources with some well-defined meaning to enhance the search capabilities of existing web searching systems. This paper reports on how ontologies developed in the EU Semantic Web project SPIRIT are used to support retrieval of documents that are considered to be spatial...

Mathematical Formulation for the Nile River Geographical Ontology

Nowadays, the proliferation of geographic information systems has caused great interest in geographical ontologies. Geographical ontologies have been introduced to facilitate knowledge sharing and to assist in recognizing spatial terms employed in a query. In this research the full model of the Nile River geographical ontology has been developed to meet the needs of the recognition of the termi...

What can I do there? Towards the automatic discovery of place-related services and activities

The current Web is rich in geographically referenced data. Mining, retrieving, and sharing this data raises the need for rich geographical place name resources that record spatial and thematic elements of geographical places. Here, possible services offered at a place and human activities that can be practised there are considered useful concepts to discover and encode in place name resources. ...

Report of MIRACLE Team for Geographical IR in CLEF 2006

The main objective of the designed experiments is testing the effects of geographical information retrieval from documents that contain geographical tags. In the designed experiments we try to isolate geographical retrieval from textual retrieval replacing all geo-entity textual references from topics with associated tags and splitting the retrieval process in two phases: textual retrieval from...

Geographical Information Retrieval with Ontologies of Place

Geographical context is required of many information retrieval tasks in which the target of the search may be documents, images or records which are referenced to geographical space only by means of place names. Often there may be an imprecise match between the query name and the names associated with candidate sources of information. There is a need therefore for geographical information retri...
