Creating Topic Hierarchies for Large Medical Libraries

چکیده
Web-based medical digital libraries contain a huge amount of valuable, up-to-date health care information. However, their size, their keywordbased access methods and their lack of semantic structure make it difficult to find the desired information. In this paper we present an automatic, unsupervised and domain-independent approach for structuring the resources available in an electronic repository. The system automatically detects and extracts the main topics related to a given domain, building a taxonomical structure. Our Web-based system is integrated smoothly with the digital library’s search engine, offering a tool for accessing the library’s resources by hierarchically browsing domain topics in a comprehensive and natural way. The system has been tested over the well-known PubMed medical library, obtaining better topic hierarchies than those generated by widely-used taxonomic search engines employing clustering techniques.

A Feasibility Study of Creative Economics in Public Libraries: Using Grounded Theory Method
Purpose: Libraries as social institutions have an indispensable role in meeting the educational and cultural needs of society. However, the economic downturn has increasingly increased the costs of library services, and consequently, limited them in implementation of the programs. Creative economics is a shortcut to making money through art, culture, and science that can partially solve the pro...
متن کاملApplication of modified balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies algorithm in parceling of brain performance using fMRI data
Introduction: Clustering of human brain is a very useful tool for diagnosis, treatment, and tracking of brain tumors. There are several methods in this category in order to do this. In this study, modified balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies (m-BIRCH) was introduced for brain activation clustering. This algorithm has an appropriate speed and good scalability in dealing ...
متن کاملMulti-Classification of Clinical Guidelines in Concept Hierarchies
Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are increasingly common in clinical medicine for prescribing a set of rules that a physician should follow. Recent interest is in accurate retrieval of CPGs at the point of care. Examples are the CPGs digital libraries National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) or Vaidurya (DeGeL), which are organized along predefined concept hierarchies, like MeSH and UMLS. In t...
متن کاملRequirements for Intelligent Taxonomy
We have recently seen a tremendous growth in the volume of online text documents from networked resources such as the Internet, digital libraries, and company-wide intranets. One of the most common and successful methods of organizing such huge amounts of documents is to hierarchically categorize documents according to topic (Agrawal, Bayardo, & Srikant, 2000; Kim & Lee, 2003). The documents in...
متن کاملAuthoring Topic Maps-based Digital Course Libraries
Digital course libraries are educational Web applications that contain instructional materials to assist students’ learning in a specific discipline (course). To address the critical issues of findability and reusability of learning resources, we propose a general framework for standards-based, ontologyaware course libraries and use it to develop an environment for building, maintaining, and us...
