چکیده

CO2 laser-driven ion acceleration has been used to generate monoenergetic, MeV proton beams from a gas jet plasma. Use of a gas jet is advantageous because it offers interactions at a density around the critical plasma density for 10 μm pulses (10 cm) and can be run at a repetition rate of 1-100 Hz. This opens the possibility to create a variable species ion source easily switchable from protons to light ions (e.g. He, N and Ne). A TW class high repetition rate CO2 laser driver is required for implementing such a source. At the UCLA Neptune Laboratory we have built a 1 Hz CO2 laser system and demonstrated the amplification of 20 GW, 3 ps laser pulses. However, peak powers on the order of 0.2-1 TW are required for producing ~ MeV proton beams. Here we report progress on an ongoing project in which the peak power of our laser system will be increased by nonlinear chirping and broadening followed by pulse compression. We also discuss a possible strategy for generating 300 mJ, 300 fs CO2 laser pulses for driving a 1 – 10 Hz laboratory ion source.

Collisionless shocks in laser-produced plasma generate monoenergetic high-energy proton beams

Compact and affordable ion accelerators based on laser-produced plasmas have potential applications in many fields of science and medicine. However, the requirement of producing focusable, narrow-energy-spread, energetic beams has proved to be challenging. Here we demonstrate that laser-driven collisionless shocks can accelerate proton beams to ∼20 MeV with extremely narrow energy spreads of ab...

Cern Ps Laser Ion Source Development

CERN, together with ITEP and TRINITI (Russia), is developing a CO2 laser ion source. The key design parameters are: 1.4×10 ions of Pb in a pulse of 5.5 μs, with a 4-rms emittance of 0.2×10 rad m, working at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. This device is considered as one candidate source for LHC heavy ion operation. The status of the laser development, the experimental set-up of the source consistin...

Prospects and Directions of CO2 Laser-driven Accelerators

Current status of picosecond CO2 lasers is reviewed. Prospective technologies for the generation of 10 m laser pulses at a peak power level of 30-200 TW in a single-shot regime and 1-10 TW at a high repetition frequency are discussed. Such laser-drivers are useful for shock wave acceleration of monoenergetic ions in a gas jet plasma as well for other advanced accelerator schemes. WHY CO2 LASER...

CO2 Laser acceleration of forward directed MeV proton beams in a gas target at critical plasma density

The generation of 1–5 MeV protons from the interaction of a 3 ps TW CO2 laser pulse with a gas target with a peak density around the critical plasma density has been studied by 2D particle-in-cell simulations. The proton acceleration in the preformed plasma with a symmetric, linearly ramped density distribution occurs via formation of sheath of the hot electrons on the back surface of the targe...

A Liquid-Xenon-Jet Laser-Plasma X-Ray and EUV Source

The laser-produced plasma is a compact and relatively inexpensive soft x-ray and extremeultraviolet (EUV) source. In this paper we describe a xenon liquid-jet laser-plasma source suitable for EUV lithography and proximity x-ray lithography (PXL). This specific source combines the advantages of the microscopic-liquid-jet target method and inert-gas, high-Z target material. EUV lithography at A ~...
