Why don’t you see what I mean? Prospects and limitations of current automatic sign recognition research
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article presents an overview of current automatic sign recognition research. Based on a review of recent studies as well as on own research, several problem areas are identified that hamper the successful recognition of signed utterances by a computer. Some of these problems are shared with automatic speech recognition, while others seem to be particular to automatic sign recognition. These latter problems include contextdependency, determining the basic units of modeling, distinguishing signs from gestures, movement epenthesis and repetition within signs. As a possible solution to these problems, it is suggested that bottom-up processing should be supplemented with topdown processing.

One way to help a lay person understand the mess we’re in is to start by handing him or her this issue of Family Practice Management and pointing to “CPT Update for 2011: Immunizations, Observations and More,” on page 5. The article, by Cindy Hughes, CPC, is not an indictment of the system; rather, it’s just a concise and cogent explanation of some changes in CPT for the coming year. But imagin...

[AL] Interesting.. why would you want to do that? [M] So that you can understand the system when ...

Mannion and Braithwaite outline a new paradigm for studying and improving patient safety – Safety II. In this response, I argue that Safety I should not be dismissed simply because the safety management strategies that are developed and enacted in the name of Safety I are not always true to the original philosophy of ‘systems thinking.’

I didn’t want to come and see you because last month I had to go to A&E when I had a funny turn in the town, and the people I saw were rude and talked to me like I was a child. The doctor in A&E said, had I had breakfast? I said, no, not yet. He didn’t give me time to tell him I was meeting a friend for breakfast afterwards, and he said I was a “silly girl.” I don’t know why. I’m a 26 year old ...
