چکیده

We propose a new method to measure and map the gas scale height of nearby disk galaxies. This method is applied successfully to the Australia Telescope Compact Array interferometric HI survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC); it could also be applied to a significant number of nearby disk galaxies, thanks to the next generation of interferometric facilities, such as the extended VLA and CARMA. The method consists of computing the Spectral Correlation Function (SCF) for a spectral–line map of a face–on galaxy. The SCF quantifies the correlation between spectra at different map positions as a function of their separation, and is sensitive to the properties of both the gas mass distribution and the gas velocity field. It is likely that spatial correlation properties of the gas density and velocity fields in a galactic disk are sensitive to the value of the scale height of the gas disk. A scale–free turbulent cascade is unlikely to extend to scales much larger than the disk scale height, as the disk dynamics on those larger scales should be dominated by two dimensional motions. We find a clear feature in the SCF of the LMC HI disk, on the scale of ≈ 180 pc, which we identify as the disk scale height. We are also tentatively able to map variations of the scale height over the disk. Extraplanar Dust in Spiral Galaxies: Tracing Outflows in the Disk-halo Interface

There is now ample evidence that the interstellar thick disks of spiral galaxies are dusty. Although the majority of extraplanar gas in the first few kiloparsecs above the plane of a spiral galaxy is matter that has been expelled from the thin disk, the feedback-driven expulsion does not destroy dust grains altogether (and there is not yet any good measure suggesting it changes the dust-to-gas ...

The Formation of Dust Lanes: Implications for Galaxy Evolution

From a survey of edge-on disks, we find that disk galaxies show a sharp, mass-dependent transition in the structure of their dusty ISM. In more massive, rapidly rotating disks with Vc > 120 km s , we see the well-defined dust lanes traditionally associated with edge-on galaxies. However, in more slowly rotating, lower mass galaxies with Vc < 120 km s , we find no dust lanes. Instead, the distri...

Extraplanar Emission-line Gas in Edge-on Spiral Galaxies. I. Deep Emission-line Imaging

The extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) in 17 nearby, edge-on disk galaxies is studied using deep Taurus Tunable Filter Hα and [N II] λ6583 images and conventional interference filter Hα + [N II] λ6548, 6583 images which reach flux levels generally below ∼ 1 × 10−17 erg s−1 cm−2 arcsec−2. [N II] λ6583/Hα excitation maps are available for 10 of these objects. All but one galaxy in the sample ...

Properties of Bulgeless Disk Galaxies Ii. Star Formation as a Function of Circular Velocity

We study the relation between the surface density of gas and star formation rate in twenty moderately-inclined, bulgeless disk galaxies (Sd-Sdm Hubble types) using CO(1–0) data from the IRAM 30m telescope, H I emission line data from the VLA/EVLA, Hα data from the MDM Observatory, and PAH emission data derived from Spitzer IRAC observations. We specifically investigate the efficiency of star fo...
