Galactic Dust Clouds Are Shining in Scattered Hα Light

چکیده
Bright emission nebulae, or HII regions, around hot stars are readily seen in Hα light. However, the all-pervasive faint Hα emission has only recently been detected and mapped over the whole sky. Mostly the Hα emission observed along a line of sight is produced by ionised gas in situ. There are, however, cases where all or most of the Hα radiation is due to scattering by electrons or dust particles which are illuminated by an Hα emitting source off the line of sight. Here we demonstrate that diffuse, translucent and dark dust clouds at high galactic latitudes are in many cases observed to have an excess of diffuse Hα surface brightness, i.e. they are brighter than the surrounding sky. We show that the majority of this excess surface brightness can be understood as light scattered off the interstellar dust grains. The source of incident photons is the general Galactic Hα background radiation impinging on the dust clouds from all over the sky. We present Monte Carlo simulations of the Diffuse Hα Galactic Background. Our models comprise direct and multiply scattered Hα radiation from the kpc scaleheight Warm Ionized Medium and midplane H II regions. The scattering is off dust that is assumed to be well mixed with the gas, with an axisymmetric density distribution taken from the literature. The results of our simulations are all-sky Hα...
متن کاملSpectropolarimetry of the Circinus galaxy
High quality 4500–6800 Å spectropolarimetric observations of the Circinus galaxy are reported. These show polarized and relatively broad (FWHM∼3300 km/s) Hα (as well as marginal Hβ) arising from a <3′′ (<60 pc) region centered on the nucleus and coincident with the the peak of the narrow line region. Broad Hα might also be present ∼8′′ (160 pc) SE from the nucleus and close to the dust lane, bu...

We present new, deep optical images (BVI+Hα) of the interstellar medium (ISM) far above the plane of the edge-on Sb galaxy NGC 891. These sub-arcsecond (0. ′′ 8 − 0. ′′ 9) ground-based images give a direct visual view of two physically distinct " phases " of the thick interstellar disk of this galaxy. A dense, likely cold, phase of the thick disk ISM is observed in our BVI images as highly-stru...
متن کاملDiscovery of Extensive Optical Emission Associated with the X - ray Bright , Radio Faint Galactic SNR G 156 . 2 + 5 . 7
We present wide-field Hα images of the Galactic supernova remnant G156.2+5.7 which reveal the presence of considerable faint Hα line emission coincident with the remnant’s X-ray emission. We also present low-resolution optical spectra for a few representative emission regions. The outermost Hα emission consists largely of long and thin (unresolved), smoothly curved filaments of Balmer-dominated...
متن کاملOptical Spectroscopy of Galactic Cirrus Clouds: Extended Red Emission in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium
We present initial results from the first optical spectroscopic survey of high latitude Galactic cirrus clouds. The observed shape of the cirrus spectrum does not agree with that of scattered ambient Galactic starlight. This mismatch can be explained by the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the diffuse interstellar medium, as found in many other astronomical objects, probably caused by...
