Effect of DEM data resolution on SWAT output uncertainty

چکیده
This paper describes the effect of DEM data resolution on predictions from the SWAT model. Measured hydrologic, meteorological, watershed characteristics and water quality data from Moores Creek watershed (near Lincoln, AR, USA) were used in the simulation. The effect of input data resolution was evaluated by running seven scenarios at increasing DEM grid sizes (30 ð 30 m, 100 ð 100 m, 150 ð 150 m, 200 ð 200 m, 300 ð 300 m, 500 ð 500 m, 1000 ð 1000 m). The model was calibrated on an annual basis for flow, NO3-N and total P using 30 ð 30 m DEM data. The predicted output at the calibrated scale was used to evaluate output accuracy for the remaining input resolutions. Results of this study showed that DEM resolution affects the watershed delineation, stream network and sub-basin classification in the SWAT model. A decrease in DEM resolution resulted in decreased stream flow and NO3-N load predictions. However, model predicted total P did not always decrease with DEM resolution. Results of this study indicate that the choice of input DEM resolution depends on the watershed response of interest. Minimum DEM data resolution ranged from 100 to 200 m to achieve less than 10% error in SWAT output for flow, NO3-N and TP predictions. Copyright 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Water Quality Model Output Uncertainty as Affected by Spatial Resolution of Input Data
Resolution of the input GIS data used to parameterize distributed-parameter hydrologic/water quality models may affect uncertainty in model outputs and impact the subsequent application of model results in watershed management. In this study we evaluated the impact of varying spatial resolutions of DEM, land use, and soil data (30 x 30 m, 100 x 100 m, 150 x 150 m, 200 x 200 m, 300 x 300 m, 500 ...
متن کاملAssessment Effect of the Spatial Resolution of Digital Elevation Model on Daily Discharge Estimation of Arazkuseh Watershed Using SWAT Model
The spatial quality of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) has a great effect on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) semi-distributed model. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of spatial accuracy of three DEMs with spatial resolutions of 10, 50 and 200 m on the results of daily discharge simulation in the Arazkuseh subwatershed located in Gorganroud watershed, Golestan pro...
متن کاملEffects of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) Spatial Resolution on Hydrological Simulation
Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...
متن کاملImpacts of DEM resolution and area threshold value uncertainty on the drainage network derived using SWAT
Many hydrological algorithms have been developed to automatically extract drainage networks from DEM, and the D8 algorithm is widely used worldwide to delineate drainage networks and catchments. The simulation accuracy of the SWAT model depends on characteristics of the watershed, and previous studies of DEM resolution and its impacts on drainage network extraction have not generally considered...

Reliable estimates of runoff are required as a part of the information sets that help watershed managers make informed decisions on water resources planning and management. This study was carried out in Shafaroud watershed located in the north of Iran. In order to achieve the best runoff simulation in the study area, first rainfall data of four stations during 1998 to 2011 were collected and co...
