Oxygen-induced Decrease in the Equilibrium Adsorptive Capacities of Activated Carbons

چکیده
Special attention was paid in this work to the role of surface chemistry in the adsorption of phenol and salicylic acid onto activated carbons. To this end, two commercial activated carbons (granular and powdered) were oxidised using ammonium peroxodisulphate [(NH4)2S2O8] and nitric acid in different concentrations. The structural and chemical properties of the oxidised adsorbents were characterised via nitrogen adsorption isotherms measured at –196°C and Boehm titrations. Phenol adsorption from solution at low concentration was studied at room temperature without specific pH control of the solution. The results showed a significant reduction in the adsorptive capacities towards phenol of the activated carbons as the oxygen content of the latter increased. However, very little effect was observed towards the retention of salicylic acid. The decrease in adsorptive capacity depended not only on the amount of oxygen per unit mass of activated carbon, but also on the textural properties of the latter.

In the present work, thermal regeneration of activated carbons (AC) was carried out at 1123 K and under N2 atmosphere. Experiments have been carried out using a single mode microwave device operating at 2450 MHz and a conventional electric furnace (EF) so as to compare the effect of the different heating mechanisms on the adsorptive capacities of the regenerated AC. The adsorbents were saturate...
متن کاملA novel saccharification method of starch using microwave irradiation with addition of activated carbon.
Activated carbons were investigated for their heat catalytic effects to improve saccharification of starch by autohydrolysis in water under microwave electromagnetic field, and the results were compared with graphite and carbon nanotubes. The activated carbons with low adsorptive capacity of maltose showed high saccharification rate, while those with high adsorptive capacity exhibited low sacch...
متن کاملAdsorption of nitrate from aqueous solution using activated carbon-supported Fe0, Fe2 (SO4)3, and FeSO4
In this laboratory scale study, impregnated almond shell activated carbon was used as adsorbent to investigate its feasibility for nitrate adsorption from aqueous medium. The effects of activated carbon dosage and contact time have been examined in batch experiments. Experimental data show that impregnated activated carbons by Fe0, Fe2 (SO4)3, and FeSO4 were more effective than virgin almond ac...

Adsorption of gold cyanide on three types of Activated Carbons (ACs) has been investigated in batch and column adsorption conditions. Applied ACs have been derived from different crops precursors i.e., coconut shell (CAC), peach stone (PAC), and walnut shell (WAC). As peach stone and walnut shells are abundant agricultural residues in Iran, the activated carbons produced from these precurso...
