Domestic exotics and the perception of invasibility

چکیده
The proportion of exotic species (the exotic fraction) on islands has been reported to be almost three times that of mainland sites of similar size (Lonsdale, 1999). The disproportionately larger fraction of exotic species has been cited as indicating that islands are highly vulnerable to invasion (Elton, 1958; but see Bellemain & Ricklefs, 2008). Although the generality of this claim has been questioned (e.g. D’Antonio & Dudley, 1995; Lonsdale, 1999; Sol, 2000), this perception persists in the literature on biotic invasions. Here, we revisit the definition of ‘exotic species’ and the associated boundaries delimiting areas of concern, and propose two additional explanations for the higher exotic fractions and perceived higher invasibility, of smaller regions, including islands. First, with smaller area, particularly combined with the discrete boundaries of islands, more species are ‘external’ and thus represent potential invaders relative to the numUSDA FS, Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Centre, 200 WT Weaver Blvd., Asheville, NC 28804, USA, Department of Biology, University of Missouri-St. Louis, St. Louis, MO 63121, USA

Spatial Scaling of Non-Native Fish Richness across the United States
A major goal and challenge of invasion ecology is to describe and interpret spatial and temporal patterns of species invasions. Here, we examined fish invasion patterns at four spatially structured and hierarchically nested scales across the contiguous United States (i.e., from large to small: region, basin, watershed, and sub-watershed). All spatial relationships in both richness and fraction ...
متن کاملField-based competitive impacts between invaders and natives at varying resource supply
1. One line of thinking is that highly successful plant invaders achieve dominance in recipient communities via competitive superiority over natives. In contrast, it has been proposed that exotic species attain dominance not by competitive prowess but due to their colonizing abilities after disturbance. Interestingly, there have been relatively few attempts to quantify competitive effects of in...
متن کاملEffects of native species diversity and resource additions on invader impact.
Theory and empirical work have demonstrated that diverse communities can inhibit invasion. Yet, it is unclear how diversity influences invader impact, how impact varies among exotics, and what the relative importance of diversity is versus extrinsic factors that themselves can influence invasion. To address these issues, we established plant assemblages that varied in native species and functio...
متن کاملCounting “ exotics ”
An introduced or exotic species is commonly defined as an organism accidentally or intentionally introduced to a new location by human activity (Williamson 1996; Richardson et al. 2000; Guo and Ricklefs 2010). However, the counting of exotics is often inconsistent. For example, in the US, previously published plant richness data for each state are only those either native or exotic to the US (U...
