چکیده

In wireless mobile networks, particularly in PCS networks, new calls to a portable may be lost due to the incorrect location information in the mobility database, which leads to an database failure. Such database failure can be recovered either through the portable’s registration initiation, the deregistration when it crosses the location area boundary or the active location update. In this paper, we analyze the active location update scheme under several different mobile traffic distributions for the failure restoration. We present analytical results for cost analysis. We find that under certain conditions there exists an optimal choice of location update period to minimize the total cost which represents the tradeoff between the location update and call loss. Our results provide a general framework for evaluating active database failure recovery schemes in wireless networks. Keywords—Wireless networks, Mobile computing, PCS, Handoff probability, Handoff rate, Call dropping probability, Call holding time, Call blocking.

Failure Recovery of HLR Mobility Databases and Parameter Optimization for PCS Networks

In PCS networks, new calls to a portable may be lost due to incorrect location information (due to either data corruption or outdated records) in the home location register mobility database. Such database failures can be recovered through the portable's registration when it initiates a call, through required registration (or deregistration for some systems) as it crosses the location area boun...

Analytical Results for Optimal Choice of Location Update Interval for Mobility Database Failure Restoration in PCS Networks

ÐWhen the location information for a mobile user in the Home Location Register (HLR) is corrupted or obsolete, the new arriving calls to the user may be lost. In order to minimize the effect of such HLR mobility database failure, a location update scheme called period location updating is proposed, and the cost analysis is performed. Analytical results for the failure recovery time distribution...

Demand re-registration for PCS database restoration

In a Personal Communications Services (PCS) network, mobility databases such as Home Location Register (HLR) and Visitor Location Register (VLR) are utilized to support mobility management for Mobile Stations (MSs). If the location databases fail, the location information loss or corruption will seriously degrade the service offered to the subscribers. In this paper, we propose a new VLR failur...

High Throughput Database Structures for Location Management in PCS Networks

This paper introduces a distributed hierarchical database architecture for location management in global personal communications system (PCS) networks with the location-independent numbering plan. The proposed structure consists of a number of database subsystems, each of which is a three-level tree structure and is connected to the others only through its root. Due to the localized nature of c...

Improving the Fault Tolerance of GSM Networks

A PCS network constantly tracks the locations of the mobile stations so that incoming calls can be delivered to the target mobile stations. In general, a two-level database system is used to store location information of the mobile stations. When the location databases fail, incoming calls may be lost. This article describes the standard GSM database failure restoration procedure which reduces ...
