چکیده

A review of the neurophysiological literature suggests that the magnocellular pathway has adequate spatial-frequency and contrast sensitivity to perceive text under normal contrast conditions (>10%) and also is suppressed by red light. Results from three experiments involving color and reading show that red light impairs reading performance under normal luminance contrast conditions. However in a fourth experiment, isoluminant color text, designed to selectively activate the parvocellular pathway, is easier to read under red light. These discrepant results suggest that the magnocellular pathway is the dominant visual pathway for text perception. Implications for reading models and developmental dyslexia are discussed.

Comment on letter to the editor: magnocellular reading and dyslexia

In his letter to the editor, Skottun (2003) emphasized two different questions about magnocellular reading and dyslexia: (1) does the magnocellular (M) pathway have a role in reading; and (2) does a M-deficit causes developmental dyslexia? We examined the first question––can the magnocellular pathway read? This question takes on a special importance in the study of developmental dyslexia. Some ...

The magnocellular pathway and schizophrenia

The magnocellular pathway and schizophrenia q I read with great interest the recent review of Skottun and Skoyles (2007) on contrast sensitivity and magnocellu-lar functions in schizophrenia. The authors critically reviewed available contrast sensitivity studies and concluded that these data do not provide evidence for the existence of an association between magnocellular deficits and schizophr...

Psychophysical Evidence for Impaired Magno, Parvo, and Konio-cellular Pathways in Dyslexic Children

PURPOSE Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities affecting millions of people worldwide. Although exact causes of dyslexia are not well-known, a deficit in the magnocellular pathway may play a role. We examined possible deficiency of magnocellular, as compared to parvocellular and koniocellular pathway function by measuring luminance and color perception. METHODS Visual stimul...

Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience 11:1

■ Recent studies have shown that (1) the global precedence effects in processing the hierarchically organized stimulus can be attenuated by eliminating the low spatial frequencies contained in the stimulus and (2) the human magnocellular pathway is responsible for processing low spatial frequencies and the pathway can be attenuated by imposing a red background on the stimulus. In the present st...

Perceptual learning as a possible new approach for remediation and prevention of developmental dyslexia

Learning to read is extremely difficult for about 10% of children across cultures because they are affected by developmental dyslexia (DD). According to the dominant view, DD is considered an auditory-phonological processing deficit. However, accumulating evidence from developmental and clinical vision science, suggests that the basic cross-modal letter-to-speech sound integration deficit in DD...
