Public Provision and Protection of Natural Resources: Groundwater Irrigation in Rural India
نویسنده
چکیده
Groundwater irrigation has been instrumental in enhancing food security and, arguably, in mitigating poverty in developing countries. Groundwater provides timely irrigation, leading to an increase in crop intensity and productivity (Food and Agriculture Organization 2003). But groundwater irrigation also contributes the most to the depletion of groundwater reserves. Countries with significant groundwater-irrigated areas, including Mexico, the United States, Yemen, Pakistan, India, and China, are experiencing substantial declines in their water-tables due to overexploitation of groundwater reserves. This paper examines the economic underpinnings of the trade-off between increasing access to groundwater and sustaining reserves of groundwater in India. Rural India is a pertinent and important setting to study how resource-intensive development schemes affect the stock of resources, particularly groundwater. As in many other countries, water tables in India are declining. Fifteen percent of the administrative blocks in India are considered overexploited (Central Groundwater

Public Provision and Protection of Natural Resources: Groundwater Irrigation in Rural India
This paper examines the trade-off between resource intensive development and preservation of natural resources in the context of groundwater. Use of public schemes that expand groundwater irrigation to mitigate poverty is challenged as being unsustainable, especially when water tables around the world are rapidly depleting. This paper evaluates the effects one such scheme on groundwater use in ...

In the absence of available surface water in semi-arid areas, groundwater has become the main water resource for various purposes. In many places in southern India, groundwater even is the only source of drinking water in rural areas. Therefore, quality and quantity aspects of groundwater management constitute acute issues for the well-being of Indian rural populations. This study proposes to u...

Rajasthan is one of the main mineral potential state of India. During the last 30 years it has witnessed enormous expansion of mining industries, but mining of most of the minor minerals coupled with changing climate has posed serious problems to the environmental fabric in the state, apart from base metal beneficiation plants. Groundwater is also being polluted day-by-day by effluents generate...

Abstract Non-renewable natural resources play an important role in sustainable development of developing countries such as Iran. However, since the natural resources should be preserved for future generations, proper use of such resources seems mandatory. Women are one of the prime users of natural resources in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to assess the conservational be...
