Descriptional complexity of unambiguous input-driven pushdown automata

چکیده
It is known that a nondeterministic input-driven pushdown automaton (IDPDA) (a.k.a. visibly pushdown automaton; a.k.a. nested word automaton) of size n can be transformed to an equvalent deterministic automaton of size 2 2) (B. von Braunmühl, R. Verbeek, “Input-driven languages are recognized in log n space”, FCT 1983), and that this size is necessary in the worst case (R. Alur, P. Madhusudan, “Adding nesting structure to words”, J.ACM, 2009). This paper demonstrates that the same worst-case 2 2) size blow-up occurs when converting a nondeterministic IDPDA to an unambiguous one, and an unambiguous IDPDA to a deterministic one. In addition, the methods developed in this paper are used to demonstrate that the descriptional complexity of complementation for nondeterministic IDPDAs is 2 2), and that the descriptional complexity of homomorphisms for deterministic IDPDAs is 2 2) as well.

Complexity of Input-Driven Pushdown Automata1
In an input-driven pushdown automaton (IDPDA), the current input symbol determines whether the automaton performs a push operation, a pop operation, or does not touch the stack. Inputdriven pushdown automata, also known under alternative names of visibly pushdown automata and of nested word automata, have been intensively studied because of their desirable features: for instance, the model allo...
متن کاملDescriptional Complexity of Two-Way Pushdown Automata with Restricted Head Reversals
Two-way nondeterministic pushdown automata (2PDA) are classical nondeterministic pushdown automata (PDA) enhanced with two-way motion of the input head. In this paper, the subclass of 2PDA accepting bounded languages and making at most a constant number of input head turns is studied with respect to descriptional complexity aspects. In particular, the effect of reducing the number of pushdown r...
متن کاملDescriptional Complexity of Machines with Limited Resources
Over the last 30 years or so many results have appeared on the descriptional complexity of machines with limited resources. Since these results have appeared in a variety of different contexts, our goal here is to provide a survey of these results. Particular emphasis is put on limiting resources (e.g., nondeterminism, ambiguity, lookahead, etc.) for various types of finite state machines, push...
متن کاملUnary Context-Free Grammars and Pushdown Automata, Descriptional Complexity and Auxiliary Space Lower Bounds
It is well known that a context-free language defined over a one-letter alphabet is regular. This implies that unary context-free grammars and unary pushdown automata can be transformed into equivalent finite automata. In this paper, we study these transformations from a descriptional complexity point of view. In particular, we give optimal upper bounds for the number of states of nondeterminis...
متن کاملDescriptional Complexity of NFAs of Different Ambiguity
In this paper, we study the tradeoffs in descriptional complexity of NFA (nondeterministic finite automata) of various amounts of ambiguity. We say that two classes of NFA are separated if one class can be exponentially more succinct in descriptional sizes than the other. New results are given for separating DFA (deterministic finite automata) from UFA (unambiguous finite automata), UFA from MD...
