Acute Metabolic Complications in Diabetes

چکیده

The acute metabolic complications of diabetes consist of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperosmolar non-ketotic coma (HNC), lactic acidosis (LA), and hypoglycemia. DKA and HNC are related to insulin deficiency. Hypoglycemia results from the treatment of diabetes, either with oral agents or insulin. Although hypoglycemia may occur in conjunction with oral hypoglycemic therapy, it is more common in patients treated with insulin. LA is usually associated with other factors that may be related to diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease (acute myocardial infarction) associated with hypoxia and excess lactic acid production.

Complications of Acute and Chronic Hyperglycemia

H yperglycemia is due to a dysregulation in the complex mechanisms implicated in glucose homeostasis. Chronic hyperglycemia, as measured by hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), is a key risk factor for the development of microvascular and macrovascular complications, which in turn negatively influence the prognosis of patients with diabetes. Several studies have shown that acute hyperglycemia can add to the...

Targeting Phosphodiesterase 4 to Block the Link between Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and the Metabolic Complications

The metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes are found to be more frequent in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The chronic systemic inflammation orchestrated by macrophages constitutes one critical pathophysiological process underlying both acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) and its metabolic complications such as obesity and diabetes. The cyclic adenosine monophosphate (c...
