Scheduling in Optical Packet Rings

چکیده
In the metropolitan area, traditional SONET/SDH circuit switched rings are likely to be replaced with optical packet/burst switching technologies. In this paper we consider a slotted WDM optical packet ring operating without resource reservation mechanisms. In such rings, optical packets in transit have priority over traffic to be inserted by the node. Packets to be inserted are thus queued according to their destination, in order to avoid head-of-line blocking. We focus on scheduling policies and compare several MaxWeight scheduling policies, including Oldest Packet First (OPF) which emulates FIFO queueing while avoiding head-of-line blocking. We show that there is a trade-off between implementation complexity and fairness, and identify the Largest Virtual Waiting Time First (LVWTF) scheduling policy as presenting both a low complexity and a good fairness performance.

متن کاملPipelined Transmission Scheduling in All-Optical TDM/WDM Rings
Two properties of optical transmissions, namely, unidirectional propagation and predictable propagation delay, make it possible to pipeline packet transmissions in alloptical networks. In this paper, we study the problem of scheduling All-to-All Personalized Communication (AAPC) in unidirectional TDM/WDM rings with pipelined transmissions, which can achieve a much higher bandwidth utilization t...

Abstrad: The design of an optical packet switched network to transport both data and voice, focussing on an IP client layer, is the subject of DAVID (Data And Voice Integration over DWDM), a research project fi.mded by the European Community. The network is composed of a metropolitan part, where optical rings are connected through devices denoted as Hubs. Those Hubs also provide the connection ...
متن کاملCross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness
This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...
متن کاملImproving Bandwidth Efficiency in a Multi-service Slotted Dual Bus Optical Ring Network
The paper proposes two IP packet aggregation techniques, called DAT (Deterministic Aggregation Technique) and WATT (Workconserving Aggregation Technique with Timer), to adapt IP traffic to a multi-service optical slotted network. To perform aggregation, IP packets belonging to different classes of service (CoS) are polled according to the strict priority (SP) or to an hybrid version of the prob...
