Vestibular Response to Electrical Stimulation of the Otolith Organs. Implications in the Development of a Vestibular Implant for the Improvement of the Sensation of Gravitoinertial Accelerations

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The loss of vestibular function cannot be restored in all cases, but a vestibular prosthesis can improve balance in many of these patients. Vestibular implant (VI) research has mostly focused on the detection of angular velocity of the cephalic movements through gyroscopes and stimulation of the three-ampulla crests of the semicircular canals in order to improve the vestibular ocular reflex [1, 2]. However, there are movements corresponding to vertical and horizontal acceleration that still need to be implemented in a VI and that are related to the sensation of gravitoinertial accelerations. These movements are detected by the macules of the saccule and the utricle.

OBJECTIVE Electrical stimulation of the utricular and saccular portions of the vestibular nerve improves stability in patients suffering from vestibular dysfunction. The main objective of this study was to evaluate a new technique, vestibular response telemetry (VRT), for measuring the electrically evoked vestibular compound action potential (saccular and utricular) after stimulating the otolit...
متن کاملDevelopmental expression of tyrosine kinase b in rat vestibular nuclear neurons responding to horizontal and vertical linear accelerations
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to be crucial for the development of peripheral vestibular neurons. However, the maturation profile of the BDNF signal transducing receptor, tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) in functionally activated otolith-related vestibular nuclear neurons of postnatal rats remains unexplored. In the present study, conscious Sprague-Dawley rats (P4 to adult) were sub...

متن کاملPostnatal development of spatial coding in the gravity sensing system
The critical maturation time of central otolith neurons in processing spatial orientations was examined in Sprague-Dawley rats. With the use of immuno-hybridization histochemical methods, we observed c-fos expression in vestibular nuclear neurons responding to transverse movement on the horizontal plane as early as P7 and those to antero-posterior stimulation as early as P9. In the inferior oli...
