Eco-efficiency measurement and material balance principle: an application in power plants Malmquist Luenberger Index

چکیده
IncorporatingMaterial Balance Principle (MBP) in industrial and agricultural performance measurement systems with pollutant factors has been on the rise in recent years. Many conventional methods of performance measurement have proven incompatible with the material flow conditions. This study will address the issue of eco-efficiency measurement adjusted for pollution, taking into account materials flow conditions and the MBP requirements, in order to provide ‘real’ measures of performance that can serve as guides when making policies. We develop a new approach by integrating slacks-based measure to enhance the Malmquist Luenberger Index by a material balance condition that reflects the conservation of matter. This model is compared with a similar model, which incorporates MBP using the trade-off approach to measure productivity and eco-efficiency trends of power plants. Results reveal similar findings for both models substantiating robustness and applicability of the proposed model in this paper.

Green Productivity in Iran's Thermal Power Plants: The Malmquist-Luenberger Approach
Electricity generation in thermal power plants as the largest producer of electricity in Iran is associated with greenhouse gas emissions. In this paper, using the Malmquist-Luenberger method, green productivity, and efficiency changes are measured for 31 thermal power plants (including 12 steam power plants, 13 gas power plants, and six combined cycle power plants) during 2009-2016. The result...
متن کاملA new slacks-based measure of Malmquist–Luenberger index in the presence of undesirable outputs
In the majority of production processes, noticeable amounts of bad byproducts or bad outputs are produced. The negative effects of the bad outputs on efficiency cannot be handled by the standard Malmquist index to measure productivity change over time. Toward this end, the Malmquist–Luenberger index (MLI) has been introduced, when undesirable outputs are present. In this paper, we introduce a D...

This paper examines the efficiency and productivity of the banking industry in Iran, consideringdifferent ownership system of banks and different definations of bank's output and input. Moreover, in this study, the inclusion of undesirable outputs in the bank's performance is evaluated. The Multi-Frontier Malmquist-Luenberger Productivity Index applied to examine the performance of the bankin...
متن کاملApplication of Malmquist Index in Two-Stage DEA for Measurement of Productivity Growth
The purpose of this paper is to develop an output oriented methodology for calculating productivity growth by using Malmquist productivity index (MPI) and two different data envelopment analysis (DEA) views (optimistic and pessimistic) simultaneously, and apply it to five Iranian Commercial Banks over the four time period (2009-2013). Consequently, we have proposed a new approach called the dou...
متن کاملAn ethics-based decomposition of Malmquist productivity index using data envelopment analysis
Productivity growth and efficiency improvements are the major sources of economic development. Pure efficiency, scale efficiency, and technology are basic factors, and rules and regulations and balance are recently known factors affecting the Malmquist productivity index. The index is the most common productivity growth index that uses data envelopment analysis models over multiple time periods...
