The Eff ect of Self - assessed Job Security on the Demand for Medical Rehab # 162 RUHR

چکیده
The interdependence of labor market conditions and the demand for health care has been addressed by several theoretical and empirical analyses. We contribute to the debate by empirically examining the eff ect of a decrease in self-perceived job security on health care utilization. That is, employees at risk of losing their job might postpone or even try not to use non-acute rehab measures in order to reduce their individual risk of being laid off by avoiding absenteeism and signaling good health. We use individual-level data from the German Socioeconomic Panel for the years 2003, 2004, and 2006. The identifi cation strategy rests on an instrumental variable approach where the county unemployment rate and its relative change compared to the previous year serve as instruments for the employees’ self-assessed risk of losing their jobs. Contrary to the hypothesis, we have evidence for job insecurity increasing the demand for medical rehab. This fi nding is robust to various model variants. JEL Classifi cation: I11

We study risk aversion and prudence in medical treatment decisions. In a laboratory experiment, we investigate the frequency and intensity of secondand third-order risk preferences, as well as the eff ect of the medical decision context. Risk preferences are assessed through treatment thresholds (the indiff erence point between not treating and treating). Under diagnostic risk, medical decision...

Using the location of baroque opera houses as a natural experiment, Falck et al. (2011) claim to document a positive causal eff ect of the supply of cultural goods on today’s regional distribution of talents. This paper raises serious doubts on the validity of the identifi cation strategy underlying these estimates, though. While we are able to replicate the original results, we proceed to show...

Local beer breweries in Burkina Faso absorb a considerable amount of urban woodfuel demand. We assess the woodfuel savings caused by the adoption of improved brewing stoves by these micro-breweries and estimate the implied welfare eff ects through the woodfuel market on private households as well as the environmental eff ect. We fi nd substantial wood savings among the breweries and, subsequent...
