We construct a discrete-event simulation model to investigate the impact of alternative decision rules and infrastructural improvements to relieve traffic congestion in a section of the Upper Mississippi River navigation system. The model covers a series of five locks that serve commercial tows with widely different barge configurations, as well as private recreational vessels. Mixes and intensities of vessel activity are highly dependent on the time of year, day of week and time of day. The model reveals that some improvement in performance (especially in peak periods) can be achieved by scheduling lock activity with priority given to vessels with shortest average processing and lock setup times (tempered by the time that vessels have spent in queue). Greater improvement occurs with the use of helper boats and greatest improvement occurs with enlarged locks. The alternative remedies must be evaluated with consideration of their dramatically different capital costs.

Investigating Strategic Alternatives for Improving Service in an Inland Waterway Transportation System
A series of five locks form a transportation bottleneck in the upper Mississippi River navigation system. With optimizing models, statistical modeling and computer simulation, the authors explore the effects of alternative scheduling regimes and infrastructure changes to improve performance of an inland waterway transportation system. In this paper, the authors show the value of triangulating a...
متن کاملA New Framework for Congestion Management with Exact Modeling of Impacting Factors
Congestion in the transmission lines is one of the technical problems that appear particularly in the deregulated environment. The voltage stability issue gets more important because of heavy loading in this environment. The main factor causing instability is the inability of the power system to meet the demand for reactive power. This paper presents a new approach for alleviation congestion re...
متن کاملStochastic Congestion Alleviation with a Trade-off between Demand Response Resources and Load Shedding
Under the smart grid environments, Demand Response Resources (DRRs) as power system resources can effectively participate in and improve performance of electric systems. Congestion management is one of the technical challenges in which DRRs can play a significant role. Previously, congestion management is applied without considering the power system uncertainties. Therefore, a stochastic conges...
متن کاملArtificial intelligence-based approaches for multi-station modelling of dissolve oxygen in river
ABSTRACT: In this study, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and feed forward neural network as two artificial intelligence-based models along with conventional multiple linear regression model were used to predict the multi-station modelling of dissolve oxygen concentration at the downstream of Mathura City in India. The data used are dissolved oxygen, pH, biological oxygen demand and water...
متن کاملLocating of Series FACTS Devices for Multi-Objective Congestion Management Using Components of Nodal Prices
Congestion and overloading for lines are the main problems in the exploitation of power grids. The consequences of these problems in deregulated systems can be mentioned as sudden jumps in prices in some parts of the power system, lead to an increase in market power and reduction of competition in it. FACTS devices are efficient, powerful and economical tools in controlling power flows through ...
