چکیده

A partial answer to why quasi-Monte Carlo algorithms work well for multivariate integration was given in [15] by introducing weighted spaces. In these spaces the importance of successive coordinate directions is quantified by a sequence of weights. However, to be able to make use of weighted spaces for a particular application one has to make a choice of the weights. In this work we take a more general view of the weights by allowing them to depend arbitrarily not only on the coordinates but also on the number of variables. Liberating the weights in this way allows us to give a recommendation for how to choose the weights in practice. This recommendation results from choosing the weights so as to minimize the error bound. We also consider how best to choose the underlying weighted Sobolev space within which to carry out the analysis. We revisit also lower bounds on the worst-case error, which change in many minor ways now, since the weights are allowed to depend on the number of variables, and we do not assume that the weights are uniformly bounded as has been assumed in previous papers. Necessary and sufficient conditions for QMC-tractability and strong QMC-tractability are obtained for the weighted Sobolev spaces with general weights. In the final section we show that the anova decomposition of functions from one of the Sobolev spaces is equivalent to the decomposition of functions with respect to an orthogonal decomposition of this space.

Liberating the dimension

Many recent papers considered the problem of multivariate integration, and studied the tractability of the problem in the worst case setting as the dimensionality d increases. The typical question is: can we find an algorithm for which the error is bounded polynomially in d, or even independently of d? And the general answer is: yes, if we have a suitably weighted function space. Since there ar...

Evolving Hidden Markov Models For Network Anomaly Detection

This paper reports the results of a system that performs network anomaly detection through the use of Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). The HMMs used to detect anomalies are designed and trained using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The use of GAs helps automating the use of HMMs, by liberating users from the need of statistical knowledge, assumed by software that trains HMMs from data. The number of stat...

“Liberating Voices” in South Asia: Case Study of Networked Resistance in Jharkhand

In 2006, a study was conducted to analyze the relevance of Liberating Voices, a project emphasizing the use of pattern languages as a method of supporting ‘civic communication.’ The study sought to evaluate whether effective networks exhibit the elements defined within the Liberating Voices database, which claims to have amassed a number of archetypical patterns for effective communication and ...

Production of exopolysaccharide by Lactobacillus rhamnosus R and analysis of its enzymatic degradation during prolonged fermentation.

The potential of Lactobacillus rhamnosus R for producing exopolysaccharide (EPS) when grown on basal minimum medium supplemented with glucose or lactose was investigated. EPS production by L. rhamnosus R is partially growth associated and about 500 mg of EPS per liter was synthesized with both sugars. The product yield coefficient (Y(EPS/S)) was 3.15 (0.0315 g of EPS [g of lactose](-1)) and 2.8...
