چکیده
Review the detection methods for organic chloramine described in the literature Evaluate the formation of organic chloramine from reactions between extracellular polymer substances (EPS), a component of biofilms, and disinfectants (free chlorine or monochloramine) Evaluate the formation of organic chloramine by reaction between heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria (as planktonic bacteria) and disinfectants (free chlorine or monochloramine) Evaluate the reactivity of disinfectants and cellular materials in the reactions that form organic chloramine Assess the biocidal efficacy of organic chloramine formed from the reaction between biofilms and disinfectants Evaluate how organic chloramine formation affects nitrification using batch and labscale pipeloop experiments

The Role and Behavior of Chloramines in Drinking Water
Chloramination has been used in drinking water treatment since the early 1900s, but its use has been low compared to that of chlorine. In recent years, a large number of utilities have switched from chlorine to chloramine as a secondary disinfectant, primarily to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Stage 1 and Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection ByProducts Rules (D/D...
متن کاملChloramination techniques to reduce NDMA formation during disinfection
Previous studies modeled NDMA formation during chlorine disinfection as arising from the oxidation of an unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine intermediate formed from the reaction of monochloramine and dimethylamine. However, chlorination of wastewater effluents indicated that this mechanism could not account for a significant portion of the observed NDMA formation. Laboratory studies indicated that...

2016 © American Water Works Association JOURNAL AWWA JULY 2016 | 108:7 Chloramine use is widespread in US drinking water distribution systems as a secondary disinfectant, and its use is predicted to increase with the final implementation of the Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule (USEPA 2005). Chloramination is beneficial from the perspective of controlling formation of regul...

Changing regulations to lower disinfectant byproducts in drinking water is forcing utilities to switch disinfection from chlorine to monochloramine. It is generally unknown whether this will impact positively or negatively on the microbiological quality of drinking water. A utility in Florida, using water with relatively high organic carbon levels from deep wells in several wellfields, made the...
متن کاملSimultaneous control of microorganisms and disinfection by-products by sequential chlorination.
OBJECTIVE To introduce a new sequential chlorination disinfection process in which short-term free chlorine and chloramine are sequentially added. METHODS Pilot tests of this sequential chlorination were carried out in a drinking water plant. RESULTS The sequential chlorination disinfection process had the same or better efficiency on microbe (including virus) inactivation compared with the...
