چکیده

The present modeling deals with the physical description of the high-current (>15 kA) constricted vacuum arc, driven by a transverse magnetic field (TMF), as found in vacuum circuit breakers applying TMF arc control. The MHD approach together with detailed heat transfer and evaporation equations for the electrodes are used to describe the arc behavior self-consistently, restricting to two dimensions (2D). This newly model leads to the characterization of the physical quantities of the arc plasma and describes the arc motion as step-wise due to the different velocities of the current attachment areas of cathode and anode. The model is applied to simulate the influence of the electrode gap distance on the arc motion: it is found that faster arc velocity can be achieved at larger gap.

Switching Vacuum Arc in a Pulsed Transverse Magnetic Field

An experimental analysis of the vacuum arc behavior in a pulsed transverse magnetic field with amplitudes up to 120 mT and frequency of 900 Hz is presented in the paper. The arc was produced between Cu contacts during the switchingoff operation of the current half-wave of amplitude 500 A and frequency of 30 Hz, so that the circuit parameters had rather moderate values which are easy to obtain i...

ELECTRODE EFFECT ON FLOW CONDITIONS IN ARGON GAS METAL ARE MODELING

A two dimensional mathematical model has been developed for describing the temperature, flow, and electric fields in the are column of the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of aluminum in argon shielding gas using axisymmetric Navier-Stokes, Maxwell, and differential thermal energy equations. The predicted results are most sensitive to the cathode spot radius and an optimum cathode spot radius exist...

Mathematical Modeling of Heat Flux Distribution of Plasma Arc by Transverse Alternating Magnetic Field

A theoretical analysis was carried out to investigate the characteristics of plasma arc injected transverse to a transverse-alternating magnetic field. Two mathematical models were developed to describe both the oscillating amplitude of the plasma arc root and the heat flux density distribution of plasma arc on the workpiece surface. The characteristic of plasma arc under the external transvers...

Mathematical modeling of blood flow in a stenosed artery under MHD effect through porous medium

In this investigation, a mathematical model for studying oscillatory flow of blood in a stenosed artery under the influence of transverse magnetic field through porous medium has been developed. The equations of motion of blood flow are solved analytically. The analytical expressions for axial velocity, volumetric flow rate, pressure gradient, resistance to blood flow and shear stress have been...

A Novel Method for High Current Vacuum Arc Interruption Using Externally Applied Ultra High Axial Pulsed Magnetic Field

Axial Magnetic Field (AMF) is widely used in vacuum interrupters to keep the arc in the diffused mode. With increasing axial magnetic field, the multiple arc mode extends to higher arc currents. In this mode of arc, the fault current can be easily interrupted due to fast recovery of the diffused vacuum arc. The magnetic field amplitudes considered in the preceding studies are all less than hund...
