چکیده

The representation of narratives of actions and observations is a current issue in Knowledge Representation, where traditional plan-oriented treatments of action seem to fall short. To address narratives, Pinto and Reiter have extended Situation Calculus axioms, Kowalski and Sergot have introduced the Event Calculus in Logic Programming, and Baral et al. have de ned the speci cation language L which allows to express actual and hypothetical situations in a uniform setting. The L entailment relation can formalize several forms of reasoning about actions and change. In this paper we illustrate a translation of L theories into Nested Abnormality Theories, a novel form of circumscription. The proof of soundness and completeness of the translation is the main technical result of the paper, but attention is also devoted to the features of Nested Abnormality Theories to capture commonsense reasoning in general and to clarify which assumptions a logical formalization forces upon a domain. These results also help clarifying the relationship between L and other recent circumscriptive formalizations for narratives, such as Miller and Shanahan's. Content Areas Temporal Reasoning, Nonmonotonic Reasoning, Knowledge Representation.

Formalizing Narratives using Nested Circumscription and Value Minimization

Representing and reasoning about narratives together with the ability to do hypothetical reasoning is important for agents in a dynamic world. These agents need to record their observations and action executions as a narrative and at the same time, to account for exogenous changes in the world, need to make plans (or re-plan) from the current situation. The early formalisms that reasoned about ...

Complexity of Nested Circumscription and Abnormality Theories

We propose LCir , an extension of circumscription by allowing propositional combinations and nesting of circumscriptive theories. As shown, Lifschitz’s nested abnormality theories (NATs, introduced in AIJ, 1995) are naturally embedded into this language. We analyze the complexity of LCir and NATs, and in particular the effect of nesting. The latter is found a source of complexity, as both forma...

Complexity of Nested Circumscription and Nested Abnormality Theories

Circumscription has been recognized as an important principle for knowledge representation and common-sense reasoning. The need for a circumscriptive formalism that allows for simple yet elegant modular problem representation has led Lifschitz (AIJ, 1995) to introduce nested abnormality theories (NATs) as a tool for modular knowledge representation, tailored for applying circumscription to mini...

Pointwise Circumscription Revisited

A decade ago, Pointwise Circumscription was proposed as a tool for formalizing common sense. In this paper, we revisit some of its uses and examine some cases in which it does not yield the intended behavior. Specifically, we explore the cases in which unsatisfiability may result from the presence of multiple minimal models (for McCarthy’s Circumscription). Then, we present a form of circumscri...
