چکیده
This study was carried out between October 2009 to July 2010 and heavy metals like Ba, As, Co, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn were determined from water and 60 fish samples (60 in total) from Antalya Bay. Physic-chemical parameter values were also measured in the seawater from catchment area. Analysis of DORM-3 and DOLT-4, reference materials showed good accuracy with the present analytic system. The temperature varied between 17.77 27.76oC; pH between 7.79 10.52; dissolved oxygen between 7.28 12.83 mg l 1 and salinity between 21.05‰ 33.84‰. The seasonal variations of heavy metal levels in some tissues of Scomber japonicus were determined. Significant differences (P<0.05) were found in tissues in relation to the seasons. Linear regression analysis and significant associations between the metal levels in tissues and fish size were also determined. The concentrations of heavy metals in water and fish were also compared with acceptable limits given by national and international water quality guidelines. The present study revealed that the metals level in water increased during spring and decreased in autumn. Both positive and negative correlations were observed between metal contents in water and physico-chemical parameters.

Differential population structuring of two closely related fish species, the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and the chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus), in the Mediterranean Sea.
Population genetic structures of the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied in the Mediterranean Sea. Fragments of 272 bp (S. scomber) and 387 bp (S. japonicus) of the 5'-end of the mitochondrial control region were sequenced from spawning individuals collected off the coasts of Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. High levels of mitochondrial control regi...

Chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus Houttuyn, 1782), is a coastal pelagic fish species that usually lives between the surface and depths of 250 or 300 m (BAuCHOt, 1987). It is a geographically widespread species that inhabits the moderate and warm waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans (COllEtE & NAuEN, 1983). It is also rather frequent in the Mediterranean and its adjacent seas (Black ...
متن کاملMaximum sustainable speeds and cost of swimming in juvenile kawakawa tuna (Euthynnus affinis) and chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus).
Tunas (Scombridae) have been assumed to be among the fastest and most efficient swimmers because they elevate the temperature of the slow-twitch, aerobic locomotor muscle above the ambient water temperature (endothermy) and because of their streamlined body shape and use of the thunniform locomotor mode. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that juvenile tunas swim both faster a...
متن کاملTaxonomic review of Argentine mackerel Scomber japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782) by phylogenetic analysis
Taxonomically, Argentine mackerels were first considered as Scomber japonicus marplatensis and later as Scomber japonicus Houttuyn 1782, although, in the last years, different studies have suggested that South Atlantic mackerel species belongs to Scomber colias Gmelin 1789. These latter results, incorporated in the main fish databases (FishBase and Catalog of Fishes), promoted a phylogenetic st...
متن کاملDistribution of Chitinolytic Enzymes in the Organs and cDNA Cloning of Chitinase Isozymes from the Stomach of Two Species of Fish, Chub Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and Silver Croaker (Pennahia argentata)
Chitinolytic activities were measured in two fish species having different feeding habits, chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and silver croaker (Pennahia argentata). Chitinase (an endo-type chitinolytic enzyme) activity was measured using pNP-(GlcNAc)n (n = 2, 3) as substrates; its level was significantly high in the stomachs of both species, as well as in the gills, intestine, pyloric appendag...
