The top quark mass will be determined to high accuracy from the shape of the t ¯ t total production cross section in the threshold region at a future linear e + e − collider. Presently the estimated statistical error in the measurement of m MS t (m MS t) is ∼50 MeV, while the estimated theoretical error is 150–200 MeV. In order to reduce the theoretical uncertainty to below 50 MeV, we have recently computed an important part of the higher-order corrections. We deomonstrate the significance of the calculated correction.

A lower bound of 135 MeV for the width of the ξ meson is obtained from analyzing the pp and pp interactions by use of Regge theory. The pp data exclude a narrow ξ as the latter would lead to σ pp tot far exceeding the measured ones. The broad width explains why the ξ may not be seen in pp experiments.
