Bohrification of operator algebras and quantum logic

چکیده
Following Birkhoff and von Neumann, quantum logic has traditionally been based on the lattice of closed linear subspaces of some Hilbert space, or, more generally, on the lattice of projections in a von Neumann algebra A. Unfortunately, the logical interpretation of these lattices is impaired by their nondistributivity and by various other problems. We show that a possible resolution of these difficulties, suggested by the ideas of Bohr, emerges if instead of single projections one considers elementary propositions to be families of projections indexed by a partially ordered set C(A) of appropriate commutative subalgebras of A. In fact, to achieve both maximal generality and ease of use within topos theory, we assume that A is a so-called Rickart C*-algebra and that C(A) consists of all unital commutative Rickart C*-subalgebras of A. Such families of projections form a Heyting algebra in a natural way, so that the associated propositional logic is intuitionistic: distributivity is recovered at the expense of the law of the excluded middle. Subsequently, generalizing an earlier computation for n×n matrices, we prove that the Heyting algebra thus associated to A arises as a basis for the internal Gelfand spectrum (in the sense of Banaschewski–Mulvey) of the “Bohrification” A of A, which is a commutative Rickart C*-algebra in the topos of functors from C(A) to the category of sets. We explain the relationship of this construction to partial Boolean algebras and Bruns–Lakser completions. Finally, we establish a connection between probability measure on the lattice of projections on a Hilbert space H and probability valuations on the internal Gelfand spectrum of A for A = B(H). ∗Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Particle Physics, Heyendaalseweg 135, 6525 AJ NIJMEGEN, THE NETHERLANDS. †Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Institute for Computing and Information Sciences, Heyendaalseweg 135, 6525 AJ NIJMEGEN, THE NETHERLANDS. ‡Eindhoven University of Technology, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, P.O. The Space of Measurement Outcomes as a Spectral Invariant for Non-Commutative Algebras
The recently developed technique of Bohrification associates to a (unital) C*-algebra A 1. the Kripke model, a presheaf topos, of its classical contexts; 2. in this Kripke model a commutative C*-algebra, called the Bohrification of A; 3. the spectrum of the Bohrification as a locale internal in the Kripke model. We propose this locale, the ‘state space’, as a (n intuitionistic) logic of the phy...
متن کاملThe witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and its preservers
One of unsolved problems in quantum measurement theory is to characterize coexistence of quantum effects. In this paper, applying positive operator matrix theory, we give a mathematical characterization of the witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and obtain a series of properties of coexistence. We also devote to characterizing bijective morphisms on quantum effects leaving the witness...
متن کاملEffect algebras with state operator
Effect algebras have been introduced by Foulis and Bennett [2] (see also [3, 4] for equivalent definitions) for modeling unsharp measurements in quantum mechanical systems [5]. They are a generalization of many structures which arise in the axiomatization of quantum mechanics (Hilbert space effects [7]), noncommutative measure theory and probability (orthomodular lattices and posets, [6]), fuzz...
متن کاملPOWERSET OPERATOR FOUNDATIONS FOR CATALG FUZZY SET THEORIES
The paper sets forth in detail categorically-algebraic or catalg foundations for the operations of taking the image and preimage of (fuzzy) sets called forward and backward powerset operators. Motivated by an open question of S. E. Rodabaugh, we construct a monad on the category of sets, the algebras of which generate the fixed-basis forward powerset operator of L. A. Zadeh. On the next step, w...
متن کاملPositive Cone in $p$-Operator Projective Tensor Product of Fig`a-Talamanca-Herz Algebras
In this paper we define an order structure on the $p$-operator projective tensor product of Herz algebras and we show that the canonical isometric isomorphism between $A_p(Gtimes H)$ and $A_p(G)widehat{otimes}^p A_p(H)$ is an order isomorphism for amenable groups $G$ and $H$.
